update on factory reset of Dell Inspiron 1525 low spec system:
it shipped with Vista RTM / No Service Packs I went hunting in my parts bin and found a compatible 1GB RAM (now has 1.5GB : 1,536MB)
second step was to resize C:\ immediately after factory reset was complete C:\ is now 32GB Real 32,768MB
third step block IE8 and IE9 and nuke Inetcpl.cpl to locked down secured security zones set to high etc.
4> uninstall most of the pre-installed bloatware / junkware - it shipped with Norton pre-installed - left it there until updates was configured and downloading, then removed it
under the RTM it was downloading updates within minutes of finishing the above preliminary config. the Dell image on the recovery partition has all 2006 - (mid)2008 updates included > less than 70 new updates found and downloaded they are installing just fine no SVCHOST.EXE hosing anything TrustedInstaller.exe approx. 2 - 4 minutes per update once RTM Updates are installed > moving it to SP1
will update about updates after SP1 is installed
I find the lack of configuration options disturbing !
I felt a great disturbance in the force.. as if millions of win 7 systems suddenly cried out in terror.

SP1 snagged on winders update, they've had a permanent problem with getting SP1 from winders update
when attempting to install SP1 from winders update SP1 will say it's 9.x MB and say instantly after clicking install that it installed but didn't then it offers it again ad nauseam ad infinitum
but that's OK that's what the stand alone installer is for and it's faster than attempting the stand alone after fresh install with no updates because they lie "SP1 contains All previous updates" um no it doesn't it's missing all the optional and recommended some of which are required / pre-requisites for SP1
post SP1 installation > less than 70 updates already downloaded and ready for install in less than an hour
again no SVCHOST.EXE hosing things up first 5 updates installed and ready for reboot in under 5 minutes
now moving toward SP2
at the end of post SP1 Updates before taking SP2 will run VSP1CLN to remove all the uninstall bloat in winsxs
I find the lack of configuration options disturbing !

My attitude is "Get em' while you can folks"
I have used the self extracting stubs and burned them to CD's Vista sp1- Windows6.0-KB936330-x86-wave0 sp2- Windows6.0-KB948465-x86 Yeah, they are still available at downloads.microsoft.com

Wish i had some hp/dell factory Vista x64 install media collecting dust in my drawer. Would like to give it a go on amd A10 with modern graphics, sometime. Probably a $5 item unopened on ebay.
Locutus, I will fire up my Vistasp2 business machine if you want to swap screenshots.

I have a Vista x64 Ultimate retail disc set from Microsoft, but no copies of the SP info. At the moment I have no machine with a disc reader, though... Had to cannibalize the power cable to the Blu-ray drive to power more SSDs.
Not having looked into this anywhere near as carefully as you folks, what's the need to run the product up through the various updates? Wouldn't installing the latest service pack directly after the initial install do the job? Edit: NM, I read on the Microsoft site that you must have SP1 to load SP2.
I do have a small need to ultimately bring up a Vista VM, as I advertise Vista compatibility with my commercial plug-in products.

OEM System Builder is better than Dell or HP discs - unless you have Dell systems that have downgrade and driver support or the actual HP system the HP discs belong to
OEM System Builder discs are "friends" with all the OEM Factory applied COA Key label stickers of the same SKU
and those COAs work anywhere, they just get Locked to the first motherboard they're activated on
updates: update
SP2 offered from winders update and "installed" reboot requested waiting for TrustedInstaller.exe to finish
we'll see what it does next

what's the need to run the product up through the various updates... ____________________________________________________________________
I'll answer that with my particular reasons
- it's an investigation to see where MS begins raping the system with SVCHOST.EXE abuse
- also the first attempt to go straight from factory reset to SP1 to SP2 resulted in a non functional windows update, which said it's never checked for updates and would just sit there and rape SVCHOST.EXE forever without ever beginning the post SP2 updates downloads
so far this system has had zero SVCHOST.EXE problems all winders updates "CPU Usage" in Vista RTM and SP1 take place strictly in TrustedInstaller.exe and not for hours on end of either side of updates process

"Never Checked for Updates" seen that on every clean install . WU lives in its own little world and doesn't communicate with UNtrusted installer. Would like to see Windows Experience Index,Locutus
So what's the workaround? Install the base system, then do a Windows Update? Then install SP1 and do a Windows Update? Then install SP2 and do a Windows Update?

I was thanking you for reminding me to download the service pack images, which I have done. Looking back, I may have thanked the wrong user. Sorry. Thanks Bayer!
Sure, I could split the power cable, but that would involve taking the monitors off the top and going inside the computer, which at the moment is utterly stable. "If it works, don't fix it."
I just got a little USB DVD drive for $30 from Best Buy for the occasional need. Now I have my XP x64 and Vista x64 disc images on the hard drive, from which I can create VMs. I imagine Microsoft will allow me to do a telephone activation of the Vista setup. The only machine it was ever installed on burned out a year ago. We shall see.

1 or 2 steps
1> Imgburn - install offline with no net connections to avoid the open candy junk spam ware - - safer still install it in a disposable system VM or otherwise with no net connection - www.imgburn.com/
I probably don't need to do any of that since I can mount an ISO as a virtual DVD player. Remember, I'm installing in a VM.
Hm, a small twist, I see that this Vista x64 is an Upgrade disc. Way back when I upgraded from XP x64. Got to think through how to convince it that I have a legit system being upgraded...
Thank you all, by the way, for all the help and hints.

how to convince it for VM - make the new VM from an existing previous version - then choose the nuclear option to install fresh instead of upgrade the existing - - it should then "format" the VM C:\
upgrade media is a pain when not actually dealing with optical discs upgrade with optical is: simply insert the previous version disc when prompted by the upgrade installer
USB doesn't work without first installing the previous version even if it's just to the first run stage it's quite a waste of time

<Rick> Good video. It's almost hard to believe that at one time Windows 98 was the resource hog, but even then, it still ran circles around what Windows 10 can do on today's modern hardware and look a heck of alot better doing it.

<Rick> As stated elsewhere, So much for the launch of Windows 11, "The Great Crash." Myself, I had a hard time getting into the site listed above, when I did get in, the video was partly done and then it crashed. There has been many other reports of crashing.

<Rick> With reports of people being able to install the dev-edition of Windows 11 on machines not meeting spec, I thought I would give it a what-the-heck try. Lucky me, I'm caught in the downloading, doesn't meet spec, clearing, re-downloading loop on my machine!

<Rick> I've recently purchased a license for ArcaOS from www.arcanoae.com/ to play with. First impressions, it's still OS/2, but it now has a Linux twist to it.

<dozrguy> laptop shit out and am stuck buying a new one. os win11 as fucked as win10 was?
Oct 2, 2021 12:56:10 GMT -6
<Rick> Let's see ..., my impression of Windows 11 is that it is a spruced up version of Windows 10 requiring a 64-bit processor plus a piece of security hardware that is less than 4 years old in order for it to run.

<Rick> On the plus side, Microsoft is supposed to be supporting Windows 10 for some time to come for those of us still using systems with I7 or older processors.

<dozrguy> STILL so much bullshit and so little time for the kiddie ideas from the hill. My new laptop (MSI GE 11-UH461) would be an awesome "10" machine but because of Winblows I can only give it a "2"......wasted $3500

<isidroco> Each new w10 update adds >100000 useless files to \Windows\Servicing\LCU\Package_for_RollupFix... folders. Even in a SSD takes time to delete that stuff. In each version they manage to worsen stuff.
