they're not even getting me to give up DOS, win 3.10, 9x, Nt4, or win2K either
yup, they're immune to current x86 and x64 malware code anyone compiling malware on modern compilers have to set obscure flags to get NT5.x compatibility which makes it less effective at attacking NT6.x and up
I find the lack of configuration options disturbing !

The take-away I had from setting up Vista was that the Microsoft of the mid 00s actually DID care about what users need. It's just such a calm, yet rich, user-oriented system.
I tweaked it a little, and it settled on a process count in the low 30s just sitting there, yet would do whatever I want. And it reboots in less than 30 seconds.
For those of you who have tried Windows 10, ask yourself the question I've asked:
What CAN'T you do with your favorite older system that you can do with Win 10 right now? What's better?
In all seriousness I couldn't think of a damned thing.

Hell, I could do some things on a Commodore Pet that I can't do in Windows 10!

Yawn, that was worth the effort ! the mysterious 7.6.7600.256 update to WU is a pretty stark change from the old VistaWU to a very 7'ishWU. Check the images. Also, WU true to form installed a slightly older intel HD graphics driver than the one i installed last night ! and you thought only 10 did that ?!?

forcing drivers in winders update can happen in XP also and if it's in full auto then it will push them onto the system
they tried it on my Asus M2A-VM with Zotac (256MB NVidia 7600GT) PCI-e card WU offered to XP-Pro SP3 an ancient NVidia basic driver in a failed attempt to replace the specialized / customized Zotac driver
on the Inspiron 1525 I hid 2 driver offers in the process of walking through the RTM > SP1 > SP2 updating
the IE7 cumulative update in Jan 2016 is the last one IE support ends also for" IE8 in vista and win 7 IE9 and 10 in win 7
IE10 in winders ape / ape dot one
last version supported in Vista is IE9
win 7 and winders ape / ape dot one must be running IE11 to get cumulative updates to which I say I don't care, I don't use IE for anything anyway and all my installations remain on the Original IE shipped

Yeah, i was surprised to see the cumulative security KB3124275 for iex7. One must upgrade 32bit iex7 via WU to iex9, you can only get the 64bit version from msft website these days. Older chrome v45.0.2454.93m works with 32bit. New Firefox 45.0.1 works with 32bit. Opera35.0.2066.92 works with 32bit.
FYI, as measured on a Vista x64 in a VM with 4 virtual cores on Xeon x5690 and 8 GB RAM and running from an SSD array. The host system has an ATI Radeon HD 7850. VMware Workstation version 11 (not the latest).
Noting that the Desktop display performance reading isn't maxed out, I can only guess the VMware sVGA driver as installed by VMware tools just isn't well-optimized for Vista desktop operations, as it scores better with newer systems in VMs.

While I have personally decided to stick with a much later version of Windows (but not 10), my question really is valid, and to your response I have to say:
First off, it's IE9, not 7.
Are you concerned because IE9 isn't updated to show off the latst HTML5 glitz? What part of that glitz do you NEED?
Are you using IE? You *could* use a more modern browser - e.g., Firefox.
To answer your question more directly and specifically (accompanied by screenshots):
My own web page looks exactly like it does in IE11.
If I want to lower my IQ I can watch YouTube videos.
This forum shows okay. In fact, it even seems to scroll more responsively than IE11.
Sites like NYTimes.com use some HTML5 features like shading (ooh, need a new OS for THAT) and DO show a compatibility message (but you can still read the articles). That's what freely available alternate browsers like FireFox are for. At this point only something like 2% or 3% of all people use IE anyway.
That FireFox can do HTML5 just fine on Vista tells us that there is no special feature in Windows 7, 8, or 10 that is needed to do it.
So I ask again: What's provided by the most modern OS that is actually needed? Vista provided Gadgets. Win 10 provides Apps. NO FUNDAMENTAL DIFFERENCE: Useless software.

mine is still on IE7 I didn't take any version upgrades I use the IE blocker kits to prevent them being offered in winders update
and I have no idea what web sites look like in IE7 because I've configured it in inetcpl.cpl to max security settings meaning it's only capable of loading straight HTML only pages everything else fails
I will never use IE for anything web related
there are plenty of other browsers available but only Firefox / Firefox Variants , Derivatives, etc. contain the functionality I want > which is 100% control over the usage etc. history only Firefox and variants, derivatives have the functions I want nuke all on exit IE says it does but it doesn't and actually can't (OS locked files anyone!)

It was just a simple, and I thought somewhat harmless question. I just haven't looked at websites via an old browser and wondered if they work. That is all.

I'm not sure what you mean by "can't" because as best I can tell I've got IE nuking history and temp files on exit just fine, but I have been giving Firefox x64 a good solid try in the past week...
I'm not terribly impressed.
In a pinch, if IE stops working for the things I need I'll be able to use Firefox, but I kind of expected it to seem better somehow. In a few ways it's a bit faster and in other ways it's a bit slower, and mostly it just works the same. I don't seem to be able to compress the top chrome (e.g., title bar, etc.) to be quite as compact as I can do with IE, even if I turn off the menus, which I'd rather not have to do. It seems the things that are important to me are not important to others.

If you are looking for an alternative to firefox that obliterates history and gives you access to ALL the same ad-ons (adblock+, Ghostery, VPN's) Opera36 is fast and stable, Fully supported for Linux and Windows, x86 & 64. Vista to 10.

nope, not color blind
actually : white sensitive can't look at all white screens for more than a few minutes when in browser it's only for a few minutes then I have to do something else like open winders exploder which is full screen color scheme
I have re-colored every installation since win 3.10
which is primarily why I will never have use for winders ape and up
the removal of the Window Color and Appearance dialog is a huge failure of MS it's also why I'll likely have trouble with any other OS no way to customize the colors = I can't use it for more than a few minutes at a time and then have to get away from the screen

Speaking of sensitivity to white screens...did you know that most LCD monitors flicker completely on and off at 240 Hz? The LED backlit ones are the worst because their switching times are so fast. They actually strain the eyes much more acutely than a good CRT monitor running at a high refresh rate.
There are several options:
Run the LCD monitor's brightness at 100% and wear sunglasses (most stop flickering at 100%).
Buy one that doesn't flicker (you'll need a good list, or a tester and a store with a lot of units on display).
Electronically modify one that you have so that it is properly designed to not flicker anymore.
I actually have gone in to my local MicroCenter with a tester I built to find out which models flicker and which ones don't. Since very few don't flicker (and they're often poor quality units), I've also modified many CCFL and LED backlit units to eliminate the flicker. Makes a difference for me!
Microsoft, is Windows 10 the best you could do? Really? After promising to listen to our feedback, what a letdown!
Good points, Techie007. None of mine flicker at all (two circa 2004 Dell 2001FP and one 2014 Dell U3014). I did the research and made the choices because many days I spend 12 or more hours in front of them.

Factory Reset is late 2007 with 2006 to Release / MFG date updates included getting it running - remove bloatware - initial security config - RTM > crapdates > SP1 > crapdates > SP2 > crapdates
current status RTM > crapdates > waiting for SP1
2 of the Vista drivers are borked - SDcard reader - Firewire 1394 both always come up as disabled and can't start uninstall, scan for hardware changes firewire drivers come up working until next boot card reader drivers last about 3 minutes before going disabled again
also ships with some blowtooth garbage pre-installed but no BT hardware

update to previous post : Toshiba vista Laptop
now this is fun installed most RTM version updates post Mfg. to EOS date for RTM
SP1 didn't appear / wasn't offered after a couple of reboots ran the bulk offline manual SP1 installer
installed most of the SP1 version update to EOS date for RTM
declined dot nut 4 client profile
SP2 didn't appear / wasn't offered ... ran the bulk offline manual SP2 installer
now here's where it gets fun / funny as soon as SP2 installation was complete and all reboots were completed I did something I usually wait until I'm done updates installed MSE using an old MSE installer which is from before update agent 7.6.7600.256 it adds another option to the WUAU Window
"Use Microsoft Update"
and it's default checked
update agent 7.6.7600.256 is still nowhere to be seen
but 500+MB of SP2 version updates were downloaded under the old WUAU style as seen in RTM, SP1 which still has the sort by date column
MSE hasn't updated itself yet because the old version I used doesn't have support anymore the newer MSE Client is ready for download though
SP2 with RTM, SP1 style updates window:
MS Update in WUAU settings:
will see soon if the updates are valid or if / when it gets forced to take update agent 7.6.7600.256
well that didn't last: it forced 7.6.7600.256 overnight after reboot from the first few update installations

Windows Update Agent versions.... As far as i know xp,vista,7 use the same ones. Win8.1 is different.
As of now i'm on 7.6.7600.256 on both my Vistax86. Yeah, it is lethargic checking/dwnlding/installing and uses a lot of system resources untill its finished. The next newest 7.6.7600.320 is not much better.

not giving up win2K SP4 either:
oh, and this is fun, just got my last win2K rebuild to download updates after being told on both Technet and MS forums that it would be extremely difficult or impossible:
well, sans excrement Sherlock, except, however, it was not difficult or impossible: what was needed was the offline installer for the winders update agent 7.4.7600.226 as all the other requirements were met: - high encryption pack : installed - windows installer 3.1 : installed - update for BITS client : installed - IE6 SP1 for win2K : installed
in this condition though, without the latest released version of the winders update client win 2K gets into a position of not being able to self update the update agent, and, the winders update page (WU), and the MS Update page (MU) can't do anything about updating the update agent ya it's a joke when the offline installer works fine, but it's like the rest of it requiring the offline installers before anything works
6 years after EOL the updates are still there on the MS Update Servers don't know for how long though makes me wanna go through and rebuild all my win2K systems just to hit the update servers repeatedly so their logs show the files are accessed recently

Another crashTuesday,as Locutus would say, came and went. My Vista sp2 turned it into update Tues,Wed,Thursday. Wu agent 7.6.7600.256 is like a trip to the dentist. CPU and Ram all but maxed out for 24 straight hours with the fan running hard. Result: 17 important security and 2 optional updates.

crash Tuesday to Thursday
Ouch, guess that's why I didn't get any updates, it didn't have time to run SVCHOSED.EXE long enough I gave up in the middle of the day when it passed 6 hours and I shut winders update off until next week - maybe even next month or wait until EOL and factory reset all my vista systems and be done with this monthly CPU ABUSE

Well, I've decided that if I don't think of a damned good reason, my systems are all off Windows Update from now on.
I'm sure that will somehow be turned against us... Just blue skying a bit...
Hypothetical newscast:
Dateline 2017: "Microsoft today announced that any system not fully updated is a security threat to the rest of the users and has disabled the licenses of anyone who hasn't kept everything up to date."

<Rick> Good video. It's almost hard to believe that at one time Windows 98 was the resource hog, but even then, it still ran circles around what Windows 10 can do on today's modern hardware and look a heck of alot better doing it.
