How to get started ? Best way to learn is by doing. Everyone has to start somewhere.
Install your first Linux distro, Keep a notebook, Write everything down for future reference. Don't hesitate to dig into the OS.
If you screw it up (and you will at some point) you can always reinstall and start over. Do yourself a big favor and clean -
install on a dedicated drive using the entire drive. This way you avoid partitioning issues and having to deal with
the bootloader(Grub) early on. PNY,Toshiba,SanDisk 128GB SSD's can be purchased on sale for $50 or less.
Remember: Linux only needs 8 to 20 GB of drive space for install, so the smaller hard drive is more than adequate.
Also, the point of all this is to TRY/Learn an alternative to Windows. If you change your mind, wipe the drive and life goes on.
Begin here - www.linuxmint.com Download an iso, burn the image to disc( DVD-R or DVD+R )
now you have install media to boot from.
A nice feature of these Linuxmint distributions is that your install DVD will be "Live"
What does that mean ? It means when you boot from the DVD, you will actually be able to run/try the OS
from the optical cd-dvd drive without actually installing it on your hard drive. Call it a practice run.
After it loads , you'll see the desktop and actually be able to click on the menus and run the programs.
In the upper left hand corner of the desktop will be the "Install Linuxmint now" icon. Until you click on it
and reboot, no install has taken place. You can quit/eject the DVD at any time and start over.
Remember: Linux has features/software that can format, partition, alter the boot mechanism
on your hard drive no matter if an OS is installed on it or not. Bare this in mind.
