Plans sure change around this house fast. I recieved my DL380 ysterday, and this machine is way bigger than i anticipated. it looks like i may need to be building a shed to house this monster.it surely wont fit where i had planned on mounting it, But it is what it is, its mine now and have a secondary plan. this machine seems in very nice shape. it does not seem beat up. there are 2-146gb sas HDD's. the inside is full of ram and fans. there is no rom, so i will have to use my external one. imma try to get it on the kitchen table today and boot it up to see what i have, maybe try to install an os. actually looking at buying a copy of windows server 2012 and bigger SAS HDD's, but have not purchased either yet
do you think that it would benefit me to swap to 7200 Sata drives? its not like this machine is going into a harse business enviroment.

ya rack mount servers can be huge, when they cram all that stuff into 1 or 2U it's got to go somewhere and it usually goes long and wide
as to the server 2012R2 it's not cheap nor are the user access CALs - all server versions include one CAL (for the Administrator User Account) - need one CAL for every other user, with min. purchase CAL pack is 5
whatever size you expect your data to be or grow to get 1.5 - 2x the space (After RAID config.)
thus if you are looking at 5 - 10 TB of current -> projected data install 10 - 15TB of space
SATA / SAS depends on the controller Most HBA do support SAS and SATA the disks will still need to be Enterprise Storage class consumer SATA will only lead to massive headaches when put in RAID
7200RPM SAS or SATA ES is OK for your usage (RAID 1 or 10) even in business environments you will see mixed usage eg. 10K or 15K SAS disks in RAID 10 for database, exchange email etc. and a bunch of 7200RPM SAS or SATA ES in RAID 10 for user data
what size HDD is this unit using 2.5 or 3.5 how many bays does it have and how many are actually connected - I've seen units with many bays but only a few actually connected due to the cheaper option of getting a lower price HBA with fewer ports most if not all Servers are CTO purpose built with no plans of upgrading so to save a few bucks they will use lower components eg. 4 port instead of 8 port HBA etc.
I use consumer class SATA in JBOD not RAID , all disks have their own drive letter -I never leave my systems running 24/7/365, if I did I would use SAS or SATA ES
with the JBOD setup I manually duplicate my data send it once go over to the system and run robocopy [source]\ [target]\ /xn /xc /xo /e which updates the target disk with the new files
or for archiving files off of the workstation(s) first target is copy, then second target is move
I find the lack of configuration options disturbing !
I felt a great disturbance in the force.. as if millions of win 7 systems suddenly cried out in terror.
8 drive bays. only 2 are being used by 2.5" 146gb SAS drives. there is an option to expand to a second set of 8 drivebays tht use 3.5" drives but that wasnt included in the sale my delimia is that 8 300Gb sas drives dont add upto much after set at raid10 so maybe i will look at the enterprise sata7200 solution as the machine will run sata drives
so, run my os, web hosting and email on the 2 sas 146gb drives and use sata drives for the rest of my storage needs, right?

SAS / SATA ES 2.5" go all the way up to 2TB but they come at a premium price
the 3.5" SAS / SATA ES currently go up to 10TB each the major players are experimenting with 12, and 14TB
another thing to consider is doing backup of the data stored on the server
depending on how much the data changes daily, weekly, biweekly, or monthly, backups need to happen for any system that is in full 24/7/365 operation
there are no absolutes in server config all configuration decisions are based upon projected usage
eg. email can be on either unless you have hundreds or thousands of email addresses email doesn't generally require high IOPS unless hundreds of users are accessing email simultaneously the only consideration is mailbox size with small storage size
etc.
do all your decisions based on how it will be used

it will primarily be used to keep wifey from constantly getting in trouble with her pc.....lol BIG FIREWALL. and as a learning tool for me to host my small website and to have a few email addresses linked to my website. a gateway to the internet for all our other machines and storage. we surely will not over work it here. we dont save videos. just pictures , files and such. 9GB may be enough, but its better to have more than we need than not enough.
lol....thats a head scratcher. funny thing about that epig, if you search for dl380 drive cages, the search options are limited, BUT, if you do a search by part #'s you get way more results. as it turns out. the DL380 will hold only six LFF drives and the cage that houses them uses up both cage slots which makes sense cause 3.5" drives are twice the size of 2.5". I did find another complete SFF cage for pretty cheap and the expansion board doesnt cost much more so i will invest in them and another set of 8 SFF 300GB drives on down the road a bit and my storage needs should be met for now.
my costs so far: used HP DL380 U2 server: $264.98 used 6- 300GB 10K 6G 2.5 SAS HDD G7 $259.98 used 6- 1TB 6G SAS 7.2K RPM 3.5" SC Midline Hard Drive $425.34 (will be returned when i get them since they will not fit)
future costs: used HP 24 BAY 3GB SAS Expander Card and 2 Cables $29.99 used DL380 G6/G7 8 SFF HDD Expansion Cage W/ Long cables $33.00 used 10- 300GB 10K 6G 2.5 SAS HDD G7 $433.30 (8 for new drivecage and 2 to replace the 2-146g drives that came with machine)
brings me in at around $1k for an enterprise server that will be more than i need. 4800GB(4.8TB) of total space,2400(2.4TB) useable after redundancy
I dont back up any of my machines. just certain files. when they start running crappy, i format and re-install.the machine i use now is at about 2yr uptime.I built it just after i started testing winblows10 and 10 has never been on this machine! I dont shut this machine down too often just when i leave for extended periods of time. I use an odd system..2-300G drives as one array(os) and 2-500GB drives in another array (everything else)Raid0. its worked good for me over the years. when i take down my OS, alot of my programs stay intact since they are not on the os array everything else we own in this house are high end laptops. wifey's stays on most of the time but my other 2 are off most of the time and one goes with me in the summer in the camper while i work construction. OH, there is one tower down in my workshop that i would like to have running down there, but there is no net connection there, so i havent been too excited about getting it up and running. this server will be primarily to host website a few email addresses, strong firewall, and maybe house a few importand files (will, inventory, log-in/passwords, serial numbers ect ect) its probably overkill for my purposes. but its cheap enough and i can use it to improve the knowlege in my mellon by learning to run a server. remember, i am just a 50yr old construction (dozer operator) guy.reason my typing and punctuation sux so bad...lol...i been at this since the win95 early days and still do the 2-finger peck It will be a real challenge to get this thing up and running as i dont know code very well and i may just end up hiring someone to come in and partially set it up for me. I would like to run a variant of linux, but, maybe because of my skill level i should stick to server2012 as i am sure there are still un-used per user license disks out there somewhere
got 6-300gb 2.5" sas HDDs, in machine and all seem working... I started with centOs, but it was beyond my capabilities, so now am running Ubutnu 14 and that really doesnt seem like a server Os, more oriented towards a desktop, so I am downloading Ubutnu server now. servers sure are slow....it takes a full 10 min for this beast to reboot. sure definately trying to limit my reboots. system is Raid0 right now. having a hard time getting the 2-146gb drives to play well with the 300gb ones at least untill i get the drive cage expansion and more drives it will stay raid0 so i can figure out how to get things set up. hopefully by Christmas i will have this machine deployed.construction season is almost upon me and so the summer wont see any progress towards this project

did you media scan / surface test those disks upon arrival ?
check if the RAID controller will allow multiple RAID sets if so place the 2x146 in one RAID set < (OS and programs) and the 6x300 in a second RAID set < (Data)
whenever dealing with RAID it's best that all disks in the set be the same capacity and capability

ya, thats what i ended up doing. in the end i will do raid50. but for now i do not have enough disks to make it worthwhile. hopefully i can get something running on this machine so i can remotly set things up from my pc upstairs
does the server go between router and modem OR behind both?
Post by Locutus deBorg on Mar 18, 2017 16:56:18 GMT -6
> does the server go between router and modem OR behind both?
depends on the capability of the networking hardware with business class routers you should be able to have everything behind
none of my stuff has public facing services so I keep all my stuff behind the routers ISP Modem > WAN port of Router-A > top LAN ISP Modem > WAN port of Router-A > LAN port of Router A > WAN port of Router-B > bottom LAN
each step is a different IP range unreachable by the others ISP Modem is DHCP server to Router A Router A is DHCP server to top LAN and the Router B Router B is DHCP server to bottom LAN thus Router-A is DHCP client of ISP Modem Router-B is DHCP client of Router-A top LAN devices are DHCP clients of Router-A bottom LAN devices are DHCP clients of Router-B

not much has gone on with the home server project. I have installed every 'server" version of linux known to man and it comes down to the fact that i am going to have to learn terminal commands in order to make this beast useful, OR install winblows software. I am leaning towards a terminal education.
$265 for the Hp Dl380 server with 2 145G sas Hdd's $265 for 6-HP 300G SFF sas Hdd's $32 for a Hdd expansion card with some cables $25 for a 8 bay SFF Hdd expander cage and some cables AND $425 for 6-HP 1TB LFF Hp Hdd's i accidently committed to buy and the drives wouldnt fit. sold for $460, but still at a loss after epig and paypal fees and shipping. I should have just kept them and bought a sas card for one of my computers to run on them.....but didnt
considering i have less than $600 into this machine, and factoring in the cost of 8 more 300g drives to fill the expander cage i bought. i dont think i am doing too bad for the final cost and with all those 300g drives, i will have plenty of space for my network
be going back to work anyday now, so my server project is on hold til next winter y'all have a great summer. i will check in periodically while i am on the road

<Rick> Good video. It's almost hard to believe that at one time Windows 98 was the resource hog, but even then, it still ran circles around what Windows 10 can do on today's modern hardware and look a heck of alot better doing it.

<Rick> As stated elsewhere, So much for the launch of Windows 11, "The Great Crash." Myself, I had a hard time getting into the site listed above, when I did get in, the video was partly done and then it crashed. There has been many other reports of crashing.

<Rick> I see Microsoft has been very quick to pull down reports of site crashing regarding the Launch of Windows 11 on the Microsoft Insiders forum.

<Rick> With reports of people being able to install the dev-edition of Windows 11 on machines not meeting spec, I thought I would give it a what-the-heck try. Lucky me, I'm caught in the downloading, doesn't meet spec, clearing, re-downloading loop on my machine!

<Rick> I've recently purchased a license for ArcaOS from www.arcanoae.com/ to play with. First impressions, it's still OS/2, but it now has a Linux twist to it.

<dozrguy> laptop shit out and am stuck buying a new one. os win11 as fucked as win10 was?
Oct 2, 2021 12:56:10 GMT -6
<Rick> Let's see ..., my impression of Windows 11 is that it is a spruced up version of Windows 10 requiring a 64-bit processor plus a piece of security hardware that is less than 4 years old in order for it to run.

<Rick> On the plus side, Microsoft is supposed to be supporting Windows 10 for some time to come for those of us still using systems with I7 or older processors.

<dozrguy> i tried installing win10 om the 'shitout' pc this morning usung media creation. EPIC FAIL! went into an endless bootloop. win7 reinstalled just fine

<dozrguy> STILL so much bullshit and so little time for the kiddie ideas from the hill. My new laptop (MSI GE 11-UH461) would be an awesome "10" machine but because of Winblows I can only give it a "2"......wasted $3500

<isidroco> Each new w10 update adds >100000 useless files to \Windows\Servicing\LCU\Package_for_RollupFix... folders. Even in a SSD takes time to delete that stuff. In each version they manage to worsen stuff.

<Rick> No, there does not seem to be very much traffic these days. I still check in from time to time.
