I think we need a place to post interesting things we've found on the Microsoft Answers forum here, since not all of us find everything or are subscribed to the latest threads.
Microsoft, is Windows 10 the best you could do? Really? After promising to listen to our feedback, what a letdown!
Here's an interested thread I stumbled upon and have been contributing to recently: Change the login background picture in windows 10 (405 others agree). Currently, the only way to change the logon background from the Hero image is to use 3rd-party software that hacks a system file and changes the resource to another image. The software has inadvertently damaged the system file for a couple of people, resulting in non-usable systems.
On page 6, srfreeman joins the conversation saying that Microsoft's official tool to change the background is "freely available to the general public". Typical fashion, he gets rebuffed multiple times, spews some more gibberish, and then leaves the discussion without ever helpfully linking people to this supposedly available Microsoft tool. On page 7, zachd [MSFT] joins the conversation and clarifies that there is no official way to change the image. On page 8, I join the discussion, being very specific on what I was hoping to see instead of the Hero image only on the logon screen. From there, several of us continue to engage zachd hilariously.

Thanx again Techie for reminding us all what a bunch of morons work at MS , now. Is it possible that srFreekman is on the DEV TEAM ? Or does he just park the cars ?
Occasionally, I run across threads where people are asking how to have programs load automatically at start-up. That in itself is not so hard to do if you know where the Start-up Folder is hidden in Windows 10. I came across one where someone is asking to have the Mail App load at start-up. I've read someplace that *.appx is supposed to be the new executable for apps, but when you look at the Windows Apps Folder under Program Files, you find no such thing. In fact, when you search the whole hard drive, there very few references to *.appx files. On going back to the Windows Apps Folder, you do find a number of microsoft.windowscommunicationapps_xx.xxxx.xxxxx.0_xxx__8wekyb3d8bbwe. One of them is for the mail app. Maybe one of you programmer types could answer this question better than I can at the moment. How do you get apps to load at start-up? Not that I care much about apps, but it would be nice to know how. Here is a link to the thread I was referring to if anyone is interested: How to make Mail app open automatically upon windows start
By making it more difficult - on purpose - to auto-start something they clearly are trying to steer people away from doing so. Why?
Maybe because if people get used to using the same application over and over they cease to crave other things, and so the App Store languishes.
In a day and age where the basic problems have been solved, it is clearly to Microsoft's benefit to hold people back from those solutions, not to facilitate their advancement. What a ridiculous world this has become.

So it's happening: Windows 10 is deleting my files. I can't say if this is a bug or if it's DRM gone awry. Ironically, the files it's deleting are reported to be purchased Xbox music MP3s. Definitely don't trust an operating system that decides which of my personal files to toss and which to keep.
If you need some "Microsoft Support engineer" laughs, see this thread: About files with name too long. I wonder how many people like this Microsoft has working on the coding team for Windows 10.

Priceless! Something definitely got lost in the translation when they were reading their scripts. Now Imagine this happening at a commercial level. I've been there and know what that's like. A client through work decided to outsource their tech support to India before the chain went out of business. Some of the stuff they came up with was at about the same technical incompetence level as this.
Guys, yesterday I saw something in the new Who can be held responsible... thread that I could solidly refute, and joined the discussion. The result is epic hilarity!

Well at least nauger spelled damn correctly. Haven't heard piss ant in a while. Sounds like HE'S the one who needs the valium and maybe a good ol' fashioned "review" by the mods. He keeps talking about the final version as though it will be THE Final version of 10 in November for PC's and phones by the Holidays. Yep. He'll be standing in line somewhere waiting to be the FIRST.

So it's happening: Windows 10 is deleting my files. I can't say if this is a bug or if it's DRM gone awry.
reading the thread: > deleting files seems like overly aggressive DRM Enforcement, > as soon as the metadata is updated by the user, da files start disappearing,
because we all know that music pirates like to update the metadata on MP3 files ya right "NOT!", these dips at MS have gone way too far
it's bad enough they use audiodg.exe to spy on all the audio going through the system since vista and up now they go and make "Faulty" code to check the files and then delete them because the user updated the mp3 metadata / tags
I sometimes get those people who wonder why my entire collection is serial number based, the full file is the serial number, the directory is the serial number, and all tracks are called Tracknn.wav Tracknn.mp3 etc.
eg. just to show a few: - the \A\ = of all things \A\udio - this machine only has the Track files the full files are on other systems
and what to do to identify what they are simple, scan the actual CD, front cover of the insert booklet, and the back cover and the files get the same name as the serial number eg.
We may have had our share of dealings with shills and Pro Win10 types on the Insiders forums, and usually the fight ends up as something as a draw with our arguments and comments getting nearly all of the votes. On the regular 10 forums, it's just amazing how fast they swoop in and prey innocent ones who are just plain unhappy with windows 10. It seems like it always made out to be the user's fault for not going out and educating themselves better about upgrading to Windows 10.
If I had to identify just one emotion to describe the surreality that has permeated the software world since Windows 8...
Disbelief.
I once, a long time ago, convinced myself that Windows would never devolve as it has, simply because Microsoft needs to be able to continue engineering new versions of Windows using Windows itself.
It never occurred to me they'd just throw out the capability to do serious engineering and just play until nothing works. I guess when you're filthy rich you can play for a long time before the piper must be paid.
Who could have imagined there would be folks - many not actually even paid to shill Windows - who would be fanboys of the self destruction of computing as we know it?
Thing is, with 100 million users already and pre-installation on many new pieces of hardware, it hasn't died. It's just not that popular (because it's not that useful) - much like Windows 8, which only ever made it to 20% or so adoption.
Do people consider Windows 8 dead? No. It's just not a strong player.
What's left for us to do? Embrace mediocrity. Disbelief!!
I have a framed cover of the final PC Mag hanging on the wall in my office. The cover story is Windows 7. I knew it would be the last PC Mag and that is why I framed it. What I didn't know is that it would be the last good OS from MS.
What to do? Get rich, retire and stop thinking about it.

This behavior is hard-baked into not only IE, but the entire windows 8 (and beyond) user interface. So almost EVERY app has this annoying behavior, and you are forced to endlessly click all over a page to establish focus. A scroll-wheel on a mouse is not the solution in a multiwindow app. We can stop complaining because nobody at Microsoft has the cajones to escalate this thread to someone who cares. You can read about the culprit “-ms-overflow-style” here:
Ugh, in Windows 10 it's even worse. The behavior is pervasive! It's on the Start Menu. It's in the Settings App. It's LITERALLY EVERYWHERE. Words cannot express how excruciating this is.
I remember when Word originally started doing this several years ago. The Office development team quickly figured out that while it's OK to disappear the scrollbar if the pointer is nowhere near it, you cannot disappear it WHILE the cursor is currently over it because the user is very likely over the scrollbar FOR A REASON and they expect to keep clicking to scroll down, etc.
I cannot fathom why the Windows 10 team does not know U/X 101 basics. Windows 10 is chock-full of head scratchers like this. I am not trying to be facetious... but, it *feels* like the Windows 10 UI was coded by a bunch of interns.
it seems to be the order of the day with stuff like that. For example the blurry font issue which was introduced in windows 8 STILL persists today some 4 years later.its because MSFT doesnt care. Can it display text? Solved. Can it scroll? Solved. They are no longer focused on finite details and usability. Lets come up with a feature, implement it in the most basic way possible, If it can remotely be used the way its name suggests then you are done. They dont care about how large it is, how fast it is, if ALL of its features work or not or if it works in any situation the EU may apply it to. There is no more testing at MSFT. they fired the testers and dumped the workload onto insiders. Sadly insiders dont test anything. Most folks may not realize this but beta testing software is Leaps and bounds above simply installing something and opening it once or twice. There exists an actual process of steps one must go through for each phase of the testing process. One of my fav's is the "Intentional Destroy" step. You purposely use the software in a manner that it either wasnt designed for or was designed NOT to be used for to observe how it behaved and how it affected the rest of the system. For example a text editor thats not designed to work on files with multiple open instances. Would it silently fail? or will it corrupt the file? In tha latter that would be a cue to the developer to write safety check code to cause it to simply fail (silently or not) to avoid the risk of file corruption.
MSFT doesnt do this kind of testing anymore. This is why blurry fonts, invisible scrollbars, broken searches, and a list too long to be able to post here manages to squeak through to EU level products where they are likely to remain for many many years. Despite complaints of these MSFT wont do anything about it because going back and revisiting semi working code takes longer and costs more money. freeman knows this too and i know he does because he maid mention of some of the steps in a slip up post he made (i wasnt a part of it but i sometimes followed him to view what he says in other areas) so he is simply taking the piss with people.
We have spent months debating this one and most of us have pretty much come to a consensus that Windows 10 is crap. Most of the arguments we have seen or have been a part of has been mostly met in opposition by FanBois with unsubstantiated facts. It usually ends in being something of a stalemate before we move on to the next thread. In this post I have found, it's sort of refreshing to see both sides of the argument being presented as answer to the question asked: Why Windows 10?

It's nice to see that a thread, apparently asked in all frankness, doesn't have to turn into a hate fest.

<Rick> Good video. It's almost hard to believe that at one time Windows 98 was the resource hog, but even then, it still ran circles around what Windows 10 can do on today's modern hardware and look a heck of alot better doing it.

<Rick> As stated elsewhere, So much for the launch of Windows 11, "The Great Crash." Myself, I had a hard time getting into the site listed above, when I did get in, the video was partly done and then it crashed. There has been many other reports of crashing.

<Rick> With reports of people being able to install the dev-edition of Windows 11 on machines not meeting spec, I thought I would give it a what-the-heck try. Lucky me, I'm caught in the downloading, doesn't meet spec, clearing, re-downloading loop on my machine!

<Rick> I've recently purchased a license for ArcaOS from www.arcanoae.com/ to play with. First impressions, it's still OS/2, but it now has a Linux twist to it.

<dozrguy> laptop shit out and am stuck buying a new one. os win11 as fucked as win10 was?
Oct 2, 2021 12:56:10 GMT -6
<Rick> Let's see ..., my impression of Windows 11 is that it is a spruced up version of Windows 10 requiring a 64-bit processor plus a piece of security hardware that is less than 4 years old in order for it to run.

<dozrguy> STILL so much bullshit and so little time for the kiddie ideas from the hill. My new laptop (MSI GE 11-UH461) would be an awesome "10" machine but because of Winblows I can only give it a "2"......wasted $3500
