Well, I decided to go for one of the security updates (which advances the way Diffie-Hellman key exchanges are processed) and it required a reboot, so I vetted the rest of the available security updates and went ahead and applied 'em all.
Before the reboot I had clocked up 70+ days of 24/7 hard daily use on the same bootup - without a glitch. This is quite likely the longest I've run a Windows system under full interactive use (which doesn't count machines that function primarily as online servers). All in all I've had a really great 3 years with Win 8.1.
I wonder whether this will be the best it ever gets and things will just go downhill from here.
Surely there are downsides to security updates, especially knowing how poorly Microsoft codes things nowadays. I did some benchmarks after the updates and it's possible performance is down a bit. There's always some variation, and there were actually a couple of measurements that were higher, so the jury is still out on whether this desktop works as well as it did. I should know in a few days of use.

Definitely the smart thing to do. What we all need to consider is some of the security updates will become necessary at some point and as much as we are suspicious about MSFT motives, we need to deal with that. Encryption code/keys is necessary. As i said before, the older standards will become unsafe and new methods need to be implemented on our legacy OS.
The "Handshake" has always been the weak link in the chain.
For me KB3197867 is impossible to ignore. Getting security only updates from the update catalog works for me. As you say Noel, only time will tell if it's worth the extra effort.
I suggest - post more in depth info in the "Update strategy for 7&8.1" thread.

More "trouble in paradise" It seems there are endless technical problems on the MSFT Community website. If the powers that be can't get THAT squared away, how can anyone have confidence in the OS ? All those poor volunteers wasting their time banging their heads against the wall.
I've noticed that topics of interest and having some substance have been getting very scarce over there. Aside from people asking the same questions over and over again without first doing a search, the most exciting thing there is someone announcing what the lastest Canary builds are thus clogging up the forum with more useless dribble almost on a daily basis.

Yep, CBarnhorst is an enthusiastic beta tester and he goes way back. Unfortunately not a whole lot to be enthusiastic about with the insider program or the preview builds. It should be(probably not) obvious to everyone that the Diagtrack telemetry is the only reason MSFT keeps the program alive. MHO, it should have ended on a high note(10586 ?LOL!) last fall.
I was just perusing the Win10 Feedback Hub when I'd noticed this: "Disk Management needs a redesign" Apparently, someone thinks it's dated, the scarier part of it is, it's being up voted upon rather quickly.

Just noticed this.... Skuza please, HAhaha. I still can't decide if srFreakman is a freakin' genius or a grand FRAUD. After running countless "unactivated" installs of 10 month after month after month after month-infinity and having them update/upgrade without fail to the latest sooper dooper safe version/build....
I can say absolutely that "invalidating the license" is the dumbest argument he's ever made. ...almost makes me want to create a new MSA just to rip him a new one. Oh well, count to "10"....breathe

That is scary. DiskManagement is one of the few feature holdovers that works just fine. Like you said before Rick, They will fix it till it's broke. Do we really want the intuitive interface to be "redesigned" like they did with the new Defender?
and of course they will deprecate it until it no longer calculates MB to shrink/extend volumes. Thats a big deal to me as sooooo many new PC's with 1000GB drives are wasted on 10.

well as long as they leave the rest alone I don't care what they do in oraguten because I'm never touchin it
until 4Kn HDDs hit the fan you'll always be able to create partitions with a win ape or 7 diskpart vista disk part is too limited for the way I do partitions win 7 and up allow the align command on every partition type vista only allows align to be used on the first primary
the only thing I've used disk mangler for is assigning the drive letters I want not whatever the system decides when it picks up new disks eg. most SATA and SAS controllers have some ports that are slightly faster than others and thus the disks are presented in the wrong order to winders I have one particular card which always detects the disks in the order 0, 1, 3, 2 thus buggering up the drive lettering the system in question is supposed to have J: and K: for port 2 and 3 but due to winders getting 2 and 3 reversed assigning K: and J: every time I change the disks in the hot swap bays I have to manually change the drive letters in disk mangler even though the card shows the disks and ports in the correct order during boot up 0- 1- 2- 3-
I find the lack of configuration options disturbing !
I felt a great disturbance in the force.. as if millions of win 7 systems suddenly cried out in terror.

align=nKB is used for correct alignment of partitions on physical sector boundaries of AFD HDDs
thus to get a partition on the first allowable 4K boundary (which is sector 8 / 64e)
you would use diskpart with the align command eg. create part primary align=32 size=65536
creates a 64GB partition starting at sector 8 / 64e / 32768Bytes sector 63 is 32256 which is not divisible by 4096 and causes write penalty on AFD HDDs
the next command is either for another primary or extended I prefer extended over having another primary because it prevents winders installation from selecting the wrong partition
eg. create part extended align=32
creates an extended partition with an offset of 32768Bytes in unallocated space after this you need logical partition(s) in the extended
eg. create part logical align=32
creates a logical drive utilizing the entire extended partition at the exact same offset the results would be as below
C:\>fsutil fsinfo ntfsinfo c: NTFS Volume Serial Number : 0xa6d65807d657d661 Version : 3.1 Number Sectors : 0x0000000007ffffff Total Clusters : 0x0000000000ffffff Free Clusters : 0x00000000007494b8 Total Reserved : 0x00000000000007a0 Bytes Per Sector : 512 Bytes Per Physical Sector : 4096 Bytes Per Cluster : 4096 Bytes Per FileRecord Segment : 1024 Clusters Per FileRecord Segment : 0 Mft Valid Data Length : 0x000000000d7c0000 Mft Start Lcn : 0x00000000000c0000 Mft2 Start Lcn : 0x0000000000000002 Mft Zone Start : 0x000000000025aac0 Mft Zone End : 0x000000000025ab20 RM Identifier: 2899B453-9364-11E1-96BA-A111B887E6C4
C:\>wmic partition get blocksize, name, startingoffset, size, index BlockSize Index Name Size StartingOffset 512 0 Disk #0, Partition #0 68719476736 32768 512 1 Disk #0, Partition #1 431387279360 68719509504
68719509504 68719476736 ------32768 gap between Primary partition 0 and Extended / Logical partition 1
using disk mangler I'd be out by 2MB rather than 512 and 32768

hmmmmmmm, maybe i been doing it wrong all these years I use the RAID software through the bios to create my partitions and most of the time i do not even format the whole allotment of space.i think i am only allowed to create 3 partitions per array with the 4th being the IDDY-BITTY partition. 2-200G to 250G drives is really all the space i need but they are getting hard to find.current drives are 2-500g sata drives. C:122g free of 174g and F:324g free of 349g i run all my machines in a RAID0 configuration. there's really nothing that important on anything i own to warrant redundancy of of any sort

I'd have to be in front of it to determine the best allocations for performance
hardware / software RAID is slightly different than working single disk when the RAID Config tool in the RAID Card creates a stripe it starts at Track 0 / LBA 0 on the disks the OS installation still creates the partitions at what appear to be physical offsets
once the stripe is created it's still not a partition ready for OS use it's still a RAW disk
when you boot with the winders 7 installation media enter the repair my computer mode start command prompt in the command prompt start diskpart
this is how you avoid the creation of the garbage 100 - 400MB partition
create all the partitions up front before starting the windows installation starting the installation on a RAW disk = gettin screwed with the 100 - 400MB partition which is useless to the normal, regular end user who isn't using butlocker to do Full Disk Encryption
I find the lack of configuration options disturbing !

I just bought myself two more 480 GB OCZ Vertex 3 SSDs from eBay for $100 each. Merry Christmas.
Nothing wrong with RAID 0. These will raise the number of SSDs I have in my system in RAID 0 from 6 to 8, and give me more room for virtual machines. With 2 million hour MTBF per drive even a RAID 0 setup is still quite reliable.
That reminds me, I'm going to need some power splitters... Gotta love SSDs... They use something like 3 watts each when under full use, a fraction of that when idle.

> Remember when each and every one of us would have answered 10?
nein, nyet, nope, never, nada, ...
DOS ya sure, 5.0 -> 6.20 was a nice improvement - not worthy of a 10 rating though - as it required getting the version with the sup pack to keep some of the older functionality
but for winders never excited about upgrades always hated upgrades since 95

Well I for one always looked forward to seeing the advancements - and complained bitterly about the regressions - but there always were SOME reasons to look forward to each new version. Maybe not in the .0 ground-level releases, but before long... I even loved Vista - after a few service packs - and Windows 8 - after .1 and some tweaks.
But 10...
The evil Emperor seems to have driven the good fully from Win 10. I liked him better when he wore a sith robe and cloak, though.

To each his own. Remember Aurora? Ambitious but not quite ready for prime time Vista feature. Today, no problem doing it but no one seems to be asking for it to be done. Instead we have this......
Remember Aurora? Ambitious but not quite ready for prime time Vista feature.
No, not by name, though I do remember the static screen backgrounds and screen saver that somewhat resembled Aurora Borealis, of course. That was always a very pleasing look, though I tended to swap it out for astroimages, which I find even more soothing.
What did the Aurora feature of which you speak do? Was that the proposal for having the desktop background be actively moving?

Yep, You do remember it ! Heady stuff back in 2005. Stevo really wanted to delay the release a while longer but the bean counters wouldn't have it. The files/resources are still in there, I screwed around with it a few years back trying to make it work in 7 but it's mostly incomplete... I have a CD around here somewhere.

HAha ha, all us "empowered developers" with grade school educations are the future of Technology according to srFreakman. If only my "Paper route" paid MORE money i could afford state of the art machinery to enjoy the full rich computing experience of 10 !! I may have to get a second job delivering Chinese food on my bicycle or raking leaves for the widow across the street in order to mature into the "grownup" that appreciates how wonderful and glorious this modern OS is !! OK, SARCASM OFF NOW.....

<Rick> Good video. It's almost hard to believe that at one time Windows 98 was the resource hog, but even then, it still ran circles around what Windows 10 can do on today's modern hardware and look a heck of alot better doing it.
