>I do find that Windows 10 requires far too much coddling
Isn't that the truth. And to KEEP it working that way.
Microsoft has done pretty much everything wrong with Windows that they could - save for one thing: They must have a "death on contact" policy internally about touching the core code, because they're really NOT screwing around with the kernel.
I guess they realize, in their heart of hearts, that you really DO need serious system testing if you're going to change the kernel.
Imagine an OS that not only degrades features and usability, but is also unstable.

10586.545 ProSome interesting changes First, the MS auto install device drivers & realistic icons option in System/Hardware is different than what we've seen in the past.

Will my display driver change remain if i lower the firewall and let WU get online and do it's thing ? We shall see. Prior win10 installs on this machine would always default to the crappy MS basic display driver. Win10 a year ago was notorious for ignoring admin/user settings. Installed older Catalyst Control Center & appropriate Radeon Xpress display adapter driver. HD video now plays and my 15inch screen resolution is an acceptable 1280 x 800
In the past year and a half i've run countless installs of 10 on different size partitions. Used the entire drive(80GB to 500GB) or multiboot partitions as small as 36GB. Ran all the techpreview builds on a 90GB partition alongside 8.1 Never had a problem with any inplace updates/upgrades on any of these installs.
Until now. On a multiboot set up, 10586.xxxHome(fully activated with digital entitlement) on a 36 GB partition never hesitated to update/upgrade to the next available version whenever available for the past 8months. So what has changed ? My ESD's were never more than 4GB+ or so. Apparently now MSFT requires MORE space for the anniversary update to 14393.xx
Using the available update assistants(9252 or 28084.exe) the process fails for lack of space. It requires an additional 20GB. Yeah, with a little effort i can delete volumes and rearrange the partitions to create the required extra space. That's not my gripe.
What about the average joes who purchased the blackfriday/bluelight specials ? Example: My sunday paper officemax add shows an hp 14" intel notebook for $200. OEM win10 installed on the imfamous cheapo 32GB solid state internal storage. Will these "customers" be S.O.L when the time comes to online/inplace/upgrade to the next bloated version of 10 ? Will they be castigated by the likes of srFreakman because they did'nt pony up the bucks for better hardware ? Will they be scolded by an MS support engineer for not having a clue how to wipe, reformat, and clean install from an .iso ? Will Andre DeCosta cut n paste a magical "solution" for them ?
Shit, I don't see this ending well. Attention Kmart shoppers !
Well, I wish i had put money on this. Kmart shoppers are having problems with anniv update !
Re-arrange volumes, adjust partition sizes. Yeah, I had to do that a few builds ago as I was surprised to see how little space I still had available on my Windows 10 partition. I even got a warning about it for something I was trying to do at the time. It should not be surprising as Microsoft has upped the minimum memory requirement for the Anniversary Update on the 32-bit edition. I guess it only follow suit that more hard drive space will also be needed to handle the extra bloatware that is now incorporated into the OS.
How do you bloat further the world's most bloated OS? You create a whole new initiative to hang junkware all over it.

Haha. Whatever happened to the "Low footprint" argument/excuse for removing all the customization options ? Remember the super lame explanations for removing the "legacy features" that worked great ? Remember how all the fanboyz fawned all over the new, modern, sophisticated DWM ? 3" by 5" phone size windows with a shitload of wasted space !
Does MSFT have a clue that a real high feature/ low footprint OS like puppyLinux will fit on a 8GB usb flashdrive with plenty of room to spare for video, music and documents ?!?
You said it before Noel, Are THEY not capable of doing anything better ?

..Make the best of this POS A firewall, properly setup, with logging enabled is the first step in a Win10 install as far as i'm concerned. Here's me. Native windows firewall with all outbound blocked except MY rules. Disabled any default outbound that i don't need or want. Created custom outbound rules for browsers, security software, & wuauserv so i can manually update Defender. NO svc.host at all. With this setup Defender definitions will only update manually. The current "WU" in 10 is no longer the traditional wuauserv.exe. The current "WU" requires a svc.host outbound rule for checks-updates-upgrades or KB's. For me this results in a Win10 machine that i don't mind leaving on at idle 24/7 with an available internet connection. Between midnight & 4am is what i call the Win10 witching hour. The log shows autonomous successful connections online. 131.253.61.80-MSFT, login.live.com 65.55.252.43-MSFT, msnbot.search.msn.com 224.0.0.251,239.255.255.250,224.0.0.1 Internet Assigned Numbers Authority all systems.mcast.net 65.55.44.108-MSFT corp,Redmond 23.209.86.161- Akamai,go.microsoft.com
This is nothing compared to the dozen or more I.P's Win10 tries to connect to when i do something as simple as visit (not logged in) the community "insider forum". My red ink pen almost ran out of ink.
I mean, big computer companies like Dell and HP *DO* make high-end computer lines. Workstations. Intel *DOES* make high-end CPU powerhouses. What the hell are we supposed to run on these things?
Microsoft is forgetting that someone has to be the producers of all the content that is sold to the masses.
I still haven't found out why Application Frame Host tries to contact msdl.microsoft.com right after bootup of Win 10 build 14393. Probably to get advertising.
Doesn't fail in any way important to me when blocked.

I'm pretty sure that sls.update.microsoft.com site contact is a license validity check done when the Windows Update service starts up. I see it when I manually start that service.
Search virustotal.com to get an IP to name resolution. E.g.,
I haven't seen it contacted spontaneously (so far) after having disabled the Windows Update service, except as I mentioned, when I start the service to do updates.
When I open the Settings App to the Activation page it immediately attempts to contact go.microsoft.com.
I've seen Visual Studio trying to reach go.microsoft.com as well. And something deep in the system does so late at night, presumably to check for driver updates (unless that's deconfigured, as I have done).
I think go.microsoft.com as a site that redirects to others may be an initiative to thwart DNS-based security measures. The answer seems simple enough... Just don't allow go.microsoft.com access.

Hello, Windows Insider! As you might already know, we recently released our Windows 10 Anniversary update! It's been an incredible ride and we have loved hearing from you during this journey. In fact, many of the new features in this update were directly inspired by feedback from Windows Insiders like you. Some of the highlights include:
Our new Windows Ink pen recognition software* An even more productive Cortana digital assistant** A faster, more accessible and more power-efficient Microsoft Edge browser Advanced security features for consumers and enterprises Exciting, new Xbox gaming experiences
Oh Security is such a flimsy word. Security is what brought us GWX.
I doubt anyone is asking for any of this crap.

So, now we are down to only 5 redeeming things ? Whataya mean i gotta pay for this ?!?!
Balls, My Windows10Pro went from being well behaved to a steaming pile of crappola. What happened ? "Make your Recovery media/image " before you have problems so the saying goes. Never had THIS problem before. Twice the process threw errors. Now my fan runs full speed continuously and everything is slow. Making an image caused problems. Well, I'll be a ............
That kind of stuff doesn't make the top ten list of what's wrong with Win10!
Now on the Lenovo win10Pro install 10586.494 Another error making a system image. Different machine/install same problem. Does MSFT NOT want us to make recovery images anymore ?!?! Would Redstone be sooooooo wonderful that we would'nt need them ?!?! Will Pigs fly outta my butt ?!?!
I never tried this since I don't have Win10 running on anything productive. Norton Ghost 15 makes images, either daily or weekly, on my five production Win7 machines.
Wow, yet another good reason to avoid the thing like the plague. Thanks for sharing, Bayer.
>Does MSFT NOT want us to make recovery images anymore ?!?!
I should imagine the answer is somewhere between "no, they don't" and "they're not competent enough to keep something as geeky as Volume Snapshot Services running".

3rd time the charm ? Hell no Another try at a system image, this time legit activated 10586.545Home version. Failed again. Multiple times. Those shitforbrains in Redmond expect me to "upgrade" to anniversary build without any recovery media at all ? What is that , blind faith ?!?
Cortana is begging you to ask her anything. Ask her how you're supposed to do a system image backup.
Actually, never mind. It's probably akin to asking my deaf and insane mother-in-law for something. That just turns out to be more and more frustrating.

Proof positive of Firewall strategy. The "old" wuauserv is allowed outbound. Result: I can manually update Defender spyware/Virus defs anytime i want. But, the new "WU for 10" cannot access the internet. Result: No system updates/KB's or version upgrades at all unless i go to default settings. Example: A successful manual Defender defin update still pops this error in 14393.105

Upgraded another one of my Pro machines to redstone. Go to default firewall, run WU, get the "feature update to version1607, wait an hour or so, unplug ethernet before restart and welcome to the anni update to 14393.222
No DoSvc, No Branchcache, No Peer to Peer, No Problemos. Straight from the horse's mouth.
After a few hours of disabling what it enabled, Un doing what it did, REsetting my settings... ....apparently group policy has been whored out by MSFT. Not very redeeming. After i take a handful of aspirin i will let you know what i really think about it.
For the second time upgrading to v1607, All core networking firewall rules were disabled. So, if you were wondering why your Redstone has no internet connectivity....n a positive note, the ComSurrogate problem removing personal properties from jpegs & png's seems to have been fixed. Thats been a problem since 10586.

No drop dead date at all. Made 4 copies of my own install media last year from a valid ESD. 10240Pro always updates to the latest version without a hitch. Even a year later it still works on any machine i install it on. The iso dwnlds from MSFT available today are for suckers. I must be doing something right, cause the "inplace online upgrade "has NEVER been a problem for me. Software Protection/Licensing Service is not required as far as i'm concerned.
14393.222Pro, Firewall strategy is still the only way to fly !
<Rick> Good video. It's almost hard to believe that at one time Windows 98 was the resource hog, but even then, it still ran circles around what Windows 10 can do on today's modern hardware and look a heck of alot better doing it.

<Rick> As stated elsewhere, So much for the launch of Windows 11, "The Great Crash." Myself, I had a hard time getting into the site listed above, when I did get in, the video was partly done and then it crashed. There has been many other reports of crashing.

<Rick> I see Microsoft has been very quick to pull down reports of site crashing regarding the Launch of Windows 11 on the Microsoft Insiders forum.

<Rick> With reports of people being able to install the dev-edition of Windows 11 on machines not meeting spec, I thought I would give it a what-the-heck try. Lucky me, I'm caught in the downloading, doesn't meet spec, clearing, re-downloading loop on my machine!

<Rick> I've recently purchased a license for ArcaOS from www.arcanoae.com/ to play with. First impressions, it's still OS/2, but it now has a Linux twist to it.

<dozrguy> laptop shit out and am stuck buying a new one. os win11 as fucked as win10 was?
Oct 2, 2021 12:56:10 GMT -6
<Rick> Let's see ..., my impression of Windows 11 is that it is a spruced up version of Windows 10 requiring a 64-bit processor plus a piece of security hardware that is less than 4 years old in order for it to run.

<Rick> On the plus side, Microsoft is supposed to be supporting Windows 10 for some time to come for those of us still using systems with I7 or older processors.

<dozrguy> i tried installing win10 om the 'shitout' pc this morning usung media creation. EPIC FAIL! went into an endless bootloop. win7 reinstalled just fine

<dozrguy> STILL so much bullshit and so little time for the kiddie ideas from the hill. My new laptop (MSI GE 11-UH461) would be an awesome "10" machine but because of Winblows I can only give it a "2"......wasted $3500

<Rick> Hello. Just checking in.

<isidroco> Each new w10 update adds >100000 useless files to \Windows\Servicing\LCU\Package_for_RollupFix... folders. Even in a SSD takes time to delete that stuff. In each version they manage to worsen stuff.
