MRT.exe went backwards installed Apr then March offered again in WUAU installed it, it didn't complain about the newer version being installed already then March offered again in WUAU
Twice i had the latest MSRtool(april) freeze up installing via WU, It froze WU-Not even End Task would close it. Once again had to hold the damn power button down for shutdown. Dwnlding v5.47 from MS website & running it no problem.
Don't tell Satya..... Stevo's OS works just fine on "modern silicon"BristolRidge Haha

Greyhat strikes again
poked the MS dragon again
XP Service Pack integrated discs don't allow entering X08 RTM COA keys during installation
however, the "oh yer 30 days are up, you must activate before you can log in"
the next part of the dialog says "you didn't enter a product code during installation, enter it now
this dialog accepts X08 RTM COA keys
the dialog even shows a crappy pic that looks like an X08 COA Key sticker
ha ha suckers !
still have 8 more XP keys to "burn" on new installs
all I need is the hardware but that's about to get difficult however, I'm sure I can get some stuff from clearance namely new "last years junk" that can't run oranguten
I find the lack of configuration options disturbing !
I felt a great disturbance in the force.. as if millions of win 7 systems suddenly cried out in terror.

Hey Locutus, I have a few Q's on an old XP sp3 install trapped on a IDE hdd that has a corrupted/missing NTLDR. Can access the files via usb adapter cable, have known good files to substitute. Recov console can't fix it.
Also been trying to cobble together some setup/install media (i386) folder & slipstream service packs with ingBurn software.
Also have an XP upgrade CD that wants proof of an existing 95,98,ME install before proceeding. Would like to hack that into basic clean install media !
Could be a good convo since epic10 has become a boarded up abandoned house in the burbs ;D
Post by Locutus deBorg on Jun 19, 2017 17:20:35 GMT -6
usually NTLDR missing requires a repair install or a full fresh install
never been able to fix it any other way here
don't know if the Upgrade media will accept a "burned" 9x / 2K disc never needed to check as the only upgrade media I have is 2K and 98 I use the 98 upgrade to process the 2K upgrade
everything else I have is full install disc due to the strange fact that upgrade media was nearly double the price of full install disc at the time
I find the lack of configuration options disturbing !
I felt a great disturbance in the force.. as if millions of win 7 systems suddenly cried out in terror.

Thanx for the reply, Locutus.
What i wound up doing was to use an old "burned" Win98SE disk to "qualify" for the upgrade when prompted so the XP install would proceed. I clean installed XP Home sp2 on a new sata SSD in my D531 using the upgrade key provided. The same laptop that was compatible with Vista through Win10. This machine has never been difficult to find drivers for.
My understanding was that the upgrade media was cheaper because the assumption was that the user had already paid for 95,98,2000,ME. Thus, any clean install would require "proof" of the older OS.
Anyway, the method to this madness is....Ultimately trying to run XP on the BristleRidge A10.
Revisiting the old OS on new hardware. This could be interesting.
BTW- Post to desktop takes 5 seconds. : D

3D pinball- amazingly good 32bit game available on XP Home. As good as anything similar currently in the Windows store. Free, no ads. Runs flawlessly on D531 Latitude with attitude.
I wonder which former MS employee got a paycheck bonus back in the day for this?

Another install of XP on a better machine. The experiment continues.
Just a 32bit Home version with SP3. Unfortunately installing on the 2016 hp/A10 machine was a no go due to the BIOS' not being fully AHCI compliant.
The next best thing was a 2012 vintage i7 cpu P775 that had premium graphics & audio. This Toshiba required more effort to find appropriate drivers. No regrets. After a little trial n error most appropriate software installed & up and running fine. Looks, sounds, runs great !
Viable in the 21rst century ? Safe online everyday ? We shall see.

Latest XP Home sp3, online activated. As long as you type in a legitimate activation key at the beginning of the install and go for it within the 30day period, it's a nobrainer. So simple with an OS that lost all extended support 3 years ago.
Obviously XP is NOT competing with 10, so i guess MSFT begrudgingly goes along with it. On the other hand the last time i tried to dwnld a Win7 iso from them(requires valid key) they gave me the brush off. Valid Keys deemed invalid. Various excuses/explanations.
As far as "safety", With all file sharing & Server functions & Remote anything Disabled, modern 3rd party chromium based browsers-properly setup, and a AV scanner that never finds nothin' wrong. (i can hear Locutus saying "told ya so") I have no reason to doubt him .
I even have Hi-Def audio n video courtesy of intel & realtek. Thankyou very much.
As I write this, I'm using my field service laptop running XP Pro. I've been thinking about doing dual boot with Windows 7 on this computer so that I would have a little more modern OS on it, but really haven't found a need to do that just yet! Other than having to switch over to using third party web browsers and email clients, this computer has been flawless in performing what I need it to do for me.
copy the text between the lines paste into notepad or other text editor
save as .reg
right click to import this .reg file from any administrative user account
boom IE is not going to run from any shortcut, run dialog etc.
only place it will run from is a command prompt window and even then it still pops the dialog that security restrictions prevent this program from running
@ Bayer win 7 media creation tool / download requires Retail FPP or Retail Upgrade FPP COAs the non hologram key stickers found on Retail and Upgrade are the only ones which work
the OEM pre installed, and OEM System Builder COA are denied as invalid by the media creation tool
the excuse is: - MS is only responsible for supporting Retail FPP and Upgrade FPP installations - OEM Pre-installed / System Builder are the responsibility of the PC Mfg.
the ISO will accept any COA branch but need to have the file first

nope, never used it
in DOS 6.20 / Win3.10 I use MSBACKUP / MWBACKUP which was a MS rebranded license of a Symantec product
never used anything for 9x because it was easy to nuke and pave
Win2K and XP I use a specific version of Symantec Backup Exec (6.52 to be exact)
vista and up I use clonezilla
clonezilla also works good with XP provided the hardware can boot the clonezilla environment - there are 3 editions - - i386 (single core) - - i686 (multi core) - - AMD64 (64-bit multi core)
image works, but prefer full disk to disk or part to part rather than image since it's much faster to pop the disk and drop in the clone than to restore from an image

Yep, disabled WU & Bits a few months ago on both Vista installs. Updates via the catalog included the last April KB's. According to my notes, KB401 7018-Security Msft graphics component took a while to complete install. Result= mspaint, snipping tool, and gui for my AV was wonked for a short period of time. WU error code was 8007041D
Last gasp was update for iex9 KB401 4661(already had it-don't use iex9,so didn't need it) last but not least the wannacrypt SMB vulnerability patch KB 401 2598( don't share files or access server,so didn't need that either. that last one was vintage May 13th.
Have used both online since then without any issues whatsoever. Stevo's OS works just fine ! Unlike 10 .

I run all my OS installs nakid, no AV installation never needed them my systems are so locked down that it's even impossible to install any HP AIO or MFD printer
vista was still gettin daily Defender Updates until crash tuesday, now it's not possible to get them from WUAU guess I'll turn off security center and defender as well so I don't get the stupid notifications > um dude defender is out of date well duh, you won't let me update it
also MSO2007 and MSO2010 are still supported but can't get the updates on vista due to WUAU being borked must get them from the PITA catalog

Well, runnin' XP in 2017 is turning out better than i could have imagined. So far So good. Software is still available for 32bit installs and four year old hardware is fully compatible.
What about security issues ? Have not had any. Zero. None.
Of course i'm not using Windows Server or any outdated file sharing protocol on the LAN. Some people may want to,though. Strangely MSFT has provided via the update catalog(june2017) a few Critical security KB's.
All pertain to the old Server2005,2008 and the expected SMB vulnerabilities. So if you like to live dangerously...go get em' .

Interesting potential for a Discussion
"Meltdown & Spectre" vulnerabilities in pretty much all cpu/gpu available in the last 20years. Just for the sake of argument, lets talk about unpatched XP or Vista.
Say, 10years ago it was not at all uncommon to see a dialog box warning "shell32.dll or user32.dll relocation in memory" . Resources for something wound up in memory in a spot reserved for system resources ONLY. That something was put there and it wasn't supposed to be there.
Here is an example i saw this morning after visiting a popular unsecured website(amc.com) with the latest FirefoxESR browser on an "unpatched" Vista machine.
Note-this is an AMD machine, potential for spectre memory vulnerability.Otherwise running perfect,no problems.
Just curious what the epic10 braintrust has to say about all this.
NoScript and any AdBlock add-on, are your friends here (I still use AdBlock Plus with "acceptable ads" unchecked)
Here's something to consider (any site can host shit unknowingly)
I have this Lady who refuses to install an ad blocker on firefox She's using win 8.1 homeless & latest firefox she has ESET AV and it goes bonkers on youtube ads click the full screen and 1 out of every 8-10 times fullscreen is reduced back down and a dialog from ESET is there saying it just blocked something malicious
I find the lack of configuration options disturbing !

Also using AdBlock+,Youtube is impossible to enjoy otherwise. JavaScript allowed only on websites where it is absolutely required. More than not, unfortunately.
Basic stuff- Bridged ISP modem, Better than average 10-100-1000 Router + cascaded Access point. Yes, its double NAT. Only without any slowdown one would expect from that. Up n running bulletproof & safe for eight years now.
<Rick> Good video. It's almost hard to believe that at one time Windows 98 was the resource hog, but even then, it still ran circles around what Windows 10 can do on today's modern hardware and look a heck of alot better doing it.

<Rick> As stated elsewhere, So much for the launch of Windows 11, "The Great Crash." Myself, I had a hard time getting into the site listed above, when I did get in, the video was partly done and then it crashed. There has been many other reports of crashing.

<Rick> With reports of people being able to install the dev-edition of Windows 11 on machines not meeting spec, I thought I would give it a what-the-heck try. Lucky me, I'm caught in the downloading, doesn't meet spec, clearing, re-downloading loop on my machine!

<dozrguy> laptop shit out and am stuck buying a new one. os win11 as fucked as win10 was?
Oct 2, 2021 12:56:10 GMT -6
<Rick> Let's see ..., my impression of Windows 11 is that it is a spruced up version of Windows 10 requiring a 64-bit processor plus a piece of security hardware that is less than 4 years old in order for it to run.

<dozrguy> STILL so much bullshit and so little time for the kiddie ideas from the hill. My new laptop (MSI GE 11-UH461) would be an awesome "10" machine but because of Winblows I can only give it a "2"......wasted $3500

<isidroco> Each new w10 update adds >100000 useless files to \Windows\Servicing\LCU\Package_for_RollupFix... folders. Even in a SSD takes time to delete that stuff. In each version they manage to worsen stuff.
