I dont know a bought others but MSFT just cant get me away from 7. I know with new HW I will be forced to use it and I still use 10 (latest skip ahead build) in a VM daily but 7 just looks, feels, and operates like an OS should. What do you all think?
Windows 7 is still my Go To operating system when I need to get things done. It just works and flows along very nicely. Occasionally, I even go back to Windows XP which is still far more capable than Windows 10 is with all of it's built-in crap-ware and resource hogging routines. Someday, I might be forced into using Windows 10 as my main operating system, but it won't be without a fight!

Tonight i logout Win10, Sat A.M i will fire up the venerable XP machine and post about how it works just fine. Seriously Folks, If you don't use the server functions or the outdated file transfer protocols then the only thing to worry about is keeping 3rd party browsers updated. AV is always a good idea if you dwnld files but i havn't seen any malware or viruses on the legacy systems.
I still have a couple of machines still running XP partitions plus another one that runs it exclusively. I have no performance problems to report on any them and a lot of software still runs very well on them. Being forced into using third party web browsers is about my only complaint I have, but it is only a minor inconvenience at this stage.

Looking forward to hearing from Locutus deBorg !
I run XP-pro every day Security locked No web browsers installed IE permanently disabled in group policy - policy is HKCU - Administrative Templates - - System - - - Don't run specified windows applications - - - - enabled - - - - type: iexplore.exe into the "banned applications list"
some neato tricks XP-Pro can see all workgroups and domains in "Network Places" I have 3 different workgroups one for the XP systems one for the win7 ultimate system which is my primary surf / web access system one for the win7 Pro system which is my primary file transfer hub win 7 doesn't need network discovery turned on - this protects the network to a degree
win 7 is aware of the workgroups and domains in the background but doesn't allow random browsing without network discovery enabled therefore even if your system were compromised real time, unless they know your machine names they ain't getting access
To browse a system from win 7 you simply enter a system name in the address bar of the win 7 in the following format \\systemname
and you will be prompted for user name and pass once a correct user name and pass is entered you are free to browse the shares and if you used an administrative user name and pass then you can browse the $shares eg. C$ will take you to C:\
you can simply browse "My network places" on XP-Pro and select any of the workgroups or domains and then select the system you wish to access you will be prompted for user name and pass

No files are ever needed to be downloaded for XP
I haven't run AV since the 90's really only had it on for a few days crapafee on win3.10 it made my 80486 DX-4 100MHz overdrive slower than the 80386 SX 66MHz I redid my DOS training on
since then I've run:
- win3.1 nekid - 9x nekid - 2K nekid - XP / XPx64 nekid - Server 2003 nekid - Vista nekid - Win 7 nekid

I find the lack of configuration options disturbing !
I felt a great disturbance in the force.. as if millions of win 7 systems suddenly cried out in terror.

Would love to continue with 7, but eventually hardware breaks down and MSFT has a bad recent reputation for NOT being cooperative(slui.exe 4) with activation issues. PakiStan says "no can do" on confirmation ID#'s over the phone.
EXAMPLE: Leaking caps on the mobo toasted a Win7x64 activated install that ran perfectly 24/7 for 10 years.
Once apon a time this was a great opportunity to upgrade to better cpu,graphics,HardDrive.. or clean install.

OEM System Builder are locked to Motherboard and only activates on that MB ever, - only exemption is warranty replacement with exact same MB or Warranty replacement equivalent in the case of discontinued product - - either way you have to call in for that activation to be processed
OEM VLK PC Mfg. Branded are locked to supported hardware with PC Brand BIOS / UEFI signatures
Retail FPP (Full Package Product) and Retail Upgrade FPP are transferable to new hardware - that's why they're the highest price

My brother suggested I might like this blog. He was once entirely right. This put up truly made my day. You can not imagine just how much time I had spent for this information! Abandoned XP to win7 64 to be able to use >4Gb. Still use XP sometimes (on dual boot) for some stuff as bulk scanning or making win7 partition backup. It was hard to find B85M XP display driver, and I'm trying to avoid hardware upgrade which might force me to change windows. Sometimes I use win10 for tests on VMWare virtual machine.
I came across an interesting museum site if one is interested in obtaining copies of older OS's and software. A lot of the titles are accompanied with descriptions about the product and user tips on how to get them installed and up and running inside VM's as well as being on real hardware.
<Rick> Good video. It's almost hard to believe that at one time Windows 98 was the resource hog, but even then, it still ran circles around what Windows 10 can do on today's modern hardware and look a heck of alot better doing it.

<Rick> As stated elsewhere, So much for the launch of Windows 11, "The Great Crash." Myself, I had a hard time getting into the site listed above, when I did get in, the video was partly done and then it crashed. There has been many other reports of crashing.

<Rick> I see Microsoft has been very quick to pull down reports of site crashing regarding the Launch of Windows 11 on the Microsoft Insiders forum.

<Rick> With reports of people being able to install the dev-edition of Windows 11 on machines not meeting spec, I thought I would give it a what-the-heck try. Lucky me, I'm caught in the downloading, doesn't meet spec, clearing, re-downloading loop on my machine!

<Rick> I've recently purchased a license for ArcaOS from www.arcanoae.com/ to play with. First impressions, it's still OS/2, but it now has a Linux twist to it.

<dozrguy> laptop shit out and am stuck buying a new one. os win11 as fucked as win10 was?
Oct 2, 2021 12:56:10 GMT -6
<Rick> Let's see ..., my impression of Windows 11 is that it is a spruced up version of Windows 10 requiring a 64-bit processor plus a piece of security hardware that is less than 4 years old in order for it to run.

<Rick> On the plus side, Microsoft is supposed to be supporting Windows 10 for some time to come for those of us still using systems with I7 or older processors.

<dozrguy> STILL so much bullshit and so little time for the kiddie ideas from the hill. My new laptop (MSI GE 11-UH461) would be an awesome "10" machine but because of Winblows I can only give it a "2"......wasted $3500

<isidroco> Each new w10 update adds >100000 useless files to \Windows\Servicing\LCU\Package_for_RollupFix... folders. Even in a SSD takes time to delete that stuff. In each version they manage to worsen stuff.

<Rick> No, there does not seem to be very much traffic these days. I still check in from time to time.
