Mr.Nerdgasm preaches the Gospel truth. I can't believe i just said that Sure glad i grabbed one of the last of the BristolRidge AMDcpu/gpu machines to multiboot Vista,7,8.1 & Linux.

As far as i can see, MSFT will choose to not support older OS on the latest processors. How exactly it will play out remains to be seen.
Two recent updates, KB 4012218 for win7 & KB 4012219 for win8.1, "Preview"of March2017 rollup. These are all about hardware ID, specificly the CPU. Reports already of intel KabyLake & AMD Ryzen machines with anything besides Win10 installed, Windows Update will get kicked to the curb. So, "extended" support will not be so extensive anymore.
My recent AMD A10-9600p(BristolRidge) cpu/apu machine is on the bubble! I've had KB4012219 fail to install repeatedly on 8.1, Not yet been offered KB4012218 on the 7partition. As for Vista, it runs fine with discrete graphics only from the accelerated processor.
Win 7 hardware system, not used interactively (it's primarily a server): Off Windows Updates since May 2016. Current uptime: 166 days of flawless operation.
Win 8.1 hardware system, used interactively: Last updates installed were December 2016 updates installed in January, with one additional update KB4010250 (Adobe Flash) installed manually on March 2. I really don't think I'm going to let Microsoft put any more updates into this system, save for possibly specific IE security updates. They're just not doing anything to the software that I need done.

I agree, Noel. Recent updates have only improved the ability to get even more updates. Sounds strange but it's true.
Setting the stage for what? Better performance? Have not seen it. Security? The only issues recently with MSE were caused by the March2017 security updates themselves. One step forward, two steps back. Don't get me started on the foolishness with the current Defender in Win10. The new gui front end shouldn't be compromising the back end, but it does. Functionality/Features? Nope. Thats not what extended support is about.
One last thing, the apparent epicfail of the MS Community yesterday. Not instilling confidence in me !

In case you have yet to figure it out,April 2017 Security updates via WU are causing problems !!!! I tested the "Security ONLY" updates for Windows7 x64 sp1 KB 401 5546 Prevents Malwarebytes Premium v3.0.6 gui from loading, requires multiple restarts. Microsoft Security Essentials(with it's own path through firewall) can no longer update definitions through the windows firewall. After 24 hours of repeated issues, I system restored back to before the install of KB 401 5546 & KB 401 4661 and now all is normal. This was on a 2009 vintage AMD AthlonX2-64 Processor.
Note- MBAM realtime protection MUST be disabled for System Restore to complete successfully!!!

that's one of the reasons why I have been refusing the CU - all future CU contain all the previous "patches", "fixes", "spy-ware", and "screw ups" - one borked component of the CU renders the entire CU useless etc.
Edit:
they're pushing out crapdates in the CU that detect the chipset and CPU
I'm not having any problems (on Windows 8.1) with the April set of updates.

From WU or standalone install ? At this moment the 8.1 system i'm using has had problems with the cumulative rollup updates failing to install/undoing changes at restart. Sometimes 65,95 or 100%. Generic error code 800FO922. Not really a surprise, it's not a typical install. Legacy(non secure boot) & No systm reserve partition. Also a CPU that is "not supported" as well as a few other details

Saw my first "unsupported hardware" blurb.... Makes WU non functional going forward. Result of installing monthly rollup kb401 9264 on new machine with old OS(win7) Uninstalled it & system restored back. Problem solved. I Will manually install security only updates from now on.
<Rick> Good video. It's almost hard to believe that at one time Windows 98 was the resource hog, but even then, it still ran circles around what Windows 10 can do on today's modern hardware and look a heck of alot better doing it.

<Rick> As stated elsewhere, So much for the launch of Windows 11, "The Great Crash." Myself, I had a hard time getting into the site listed above, when I did get in, the video was partly done and then it crashed. There has been many other reports of crashing.

<Rick> I see Microsoft has been very quick to pull down reports of site crashing regarding the Launch of Windows 11 on the Microsoft Insiders forum.

<Rick> With reports of people being able to install the dev-edition of Windows 11 on machines not meeting spec, I thought I would give it a what-the-heck try. Lucky me, I'm caught in the downloading, doesn't meet spec, clearing, re-downloading loop on my machine!

<Rick> I've recently purchased a license for ArcaOS from www.arcanoae.com/ to play with. First impressions, it's still OS/2, but it now has a Linux twist to it.

<dozrguy> laptop shit out and am stuck buying a new one. os win11 as fucked as win10 was?
Oct 2, 2021 12:56:10 GMT -6
<Rick> Let's see ..., my impression of Windows 11 is that it is a spruced up version of Windows 10 requiring a 64-bit processor plus a piece of security hardware that is less than 4 years old in order for it to run.

<Rick> On the plus side, Microsoft is supposed to be supporting Windows 10 for some time to come for those of us still using systems with I7 or older processors.

<dozrguy> STILL so much bullshit and so little time for the kiddie ideas from the hill. My new laptop (MSI GE 11-UH461) would be an awesome "10" machine but because of Winblows I can only give it a "2"......wasted $3500

<Rick> Hello. Just checking in.

<isidroco> Each new w10 update adds >100000 useless files to \Windows\Servicing\LCU\Package_for_RollupFix... folders. Even in a SSD takes time to delete that stuff. In each version they manage to worsen stuff.

<Rick> No, there does not seem to be very much traffic these days. I still check in from time to time.
