So, my 5 pc subcrription ran out for ESET NOd32. I did Some research and decided to go with Kapersky total security. I really dont need all the things it comes with, but in an effort to get the information wifey shares freely with anyone who asks, i decided its time to lewarn about forewalls, password managers and such did i make the right choice? nortons seemed to be the most suggested, but i had issues with them years ago on a computer. its a very intrusive program and very resource hungry
A great example of what i have to deal with when it comes to my significant other: The other night we are watching Tv and the phone rings with a call from colorado, she answers and its some medical place about issues with one of her kids. she dont know if these people are who they say they are, but she just rattled off here SS# ,birthdate, and some other vital private info.I so wanted to throttle her at that very moment!
I suspect that in 3 weeks my "paid for" 400K house will be mortgaged to the hilt, along with the harley's, vehicles, and anything ele of value we own. DAMN her!!!! I rambled on and on for 3 hours about how she shouldnt be doing shit like that, BUT, i think it just went in one ear and right out the other!

ya, it was the security faults of other companies that allowed the hackers to pull off what they did but his own faulty usage of "convenience" features led to way more damage than would have been if none of the accounts had been linked
hacker proverb: security is not convenient and convenience is not secure
check out some of the defcon vids on youtube
I find the lack of configuration options disturbing !
I felt a great disturbance in the force.. as if millions of win 7 systems suddenly cried out in terror.
Phone scammers know how to get inside defenses. They know people let their hair down at home and relax.
Thus, only the simplest defense will work... Make a rule: NO info unless YOU call THEM.
"Can I call you back" is not too rude. Then take the time to look up the proper number and do so if you feel it's important.
Regarding digital security... I've already published a WAY better way to lock your Windows systems down than any antivirus software. Check my "Build Your Own Hosts File" thread.
You don't need a 3rd party security package at all. In fact you don't really even need to be running active AV software, provided you don't go out of your way to blindly download software yourself and run it without thinking.
Don't spend money to put software on your computer that's going to add to the complexity and slow things down. Simplify things by just not allowing your systems to visit badware websites. Then use Windows Defender if you feel naked, and scan after the fact with e.g., MBAM. Do what I say and expect to see nothing but this:
If you have other devices in the house you'd like to protect, pick a machine that's always on to be your own DNS server, install a freeware open source DNS server like "Dual DHCP and DNS Server", and run a slightly altered process from my Hosts file builder to create a DNS blacklist that serves as a first line of defense for all systems. I can provide a copy of mine for that too if you'd like.
Security CAN be convenient, but you have to do things others haven't thought of.
Oh, and the idea works with antivirus software in place too, if you just can't get enough security. :-)
In the context of the original anecdote about the phone scammer... Imagine if when they called all they got was 3 tones and "I'm sorry, that is not a working number."
Noel, I have always wanted to set-up my own server. just have never took the time to do it. would make security alot easier to manage last 2 days i have been having issues with my i7 tower. i have had to open it up and put a box fan to blow inside it to keep my drives cool (4/raid0/3 partitions/) noticed now today through resource manager that my drives are getting slurped on to the tune of 100% useage spikes and its causing them to overheat when i start gaming. Also, the drives NEVEr stop clicking. even when the monitor is off and i am doing nothing on the pc. BSOD's suck and i have not had massive #'s like this in years. i may just format and re-install windows if i cant figgure it out. on the subject of wifey: i installed ghostery, noscript, dedtructing cookies, and ad-block plus on the version of firefox on her pc. its been a weeks and she has it royally fucked up already. she has no interest in security (for obviously stupid example, see earlier post) and i just cant be behind her 24/7/365 to supervise her. server is the next logical choice, i guess. just lock her out from the deviousness she can cause because she things it wont happen to her

he proves himself a bit of a numpty by failing the spam phishing click bait attack
but the one where the woman takes control of his cell account it's absolutely scary that the call center and the cell provider don't have proper checks and balances to prevent this type of attack
I find the lack of configuration options disturbing !

<Rick> Good video. It's almost hard to believe that at one time Windows 98 was the resource hog, but even then, it still ran circles around what Windows 10 can do on today's modern hardware and look a heck of alot better doing it.

<Rick> As stated elsewhere, So much for the launch of Windows 11, "The Great Crash." Myself, I had a hard time getting into the site listed above, when I did get in, the video was partly done and then it crashed. There has been many other reports of crashing.

<Rick> I see Microsoft has been very quick to pull down reports of site crashing regarding the Launch of Windows 11 on the Microsoft Insiders forum.

<Rick> With reports of people being able to install the dev-edition of Windows 11 on machines not meeting spec, I thought I would give it a what-the-heck try. Lucky me, I'm caught in the downloading, doesn't meet spec, clearing, re-downloading loop on my machine!

<Rick> I've recently purchased a license for ArcaOS from www.arcanoae.com/ to play with. First impressions, it's still OS/2, but it now has a Linux twist to it.

<dozrguy> laptop shit out and am stuck buying a new one. os win11 as fucked as win10 was?
Oct 2, 2021 12:56:10 GMT -6
<Rick> Let's see ..., my impression of Windows 11 is that it is a spruced up version of Windows 10 requiring a 64-bit processor plus a piece of security hardware that is less than 4 years old in order for it to run.

<Rick> On the plus side, Microsoft is supposed to be supporting Windows 10 for some time to come for those of us still using systems with I7 or older processors.

<dozrguy> STILL so much bullshit and so little time for the kiddie ideas from the hill. My new laptop (MSI GE 11-UH461) would be an awesome "10" machine but because of Winblows I can only give it a "2"......wasted $3500

<Rick> Hello. Just checking in.

<isidroco> Each new w10 update adds >100000 useless files to \Windows\Servicing\LCU\Package_for_RollupFix... folders. Even in a SSD takes time to delete that stuff. In each version they manage to worsen stuff.

<Rick> No, there does not seem to be very much traffic these days. I still check in from time to time.
