i just had to redo my fingerprint passcode yesterday, and while i was at ir i added my left thumbprint too.at least they were smart about it and made it so if the fingerprint wasnt being read, the actual 4digit passcode could be entered i really like the finger passcode option alot

Nerd tip: If you’re using a Mac or Linux, you can securely generate a random 11-digit passcode by opening the Terminal app and typing this command: python -c 'from random import SystemRandom as r; print(r().randint(0,10**11-1))'
Once you’ve created a new 11-digit passcode, you can start using it by opening the Settings app, selecting “Touch ID & Passcode,” and entering your old passcode if prompted. Then, if you have an existing passcode, select “Change passcode” and enter your old passcode. If you do not have an existing passcode, and are setting one for the first time, click “Turn passcode on.”
Then, in all cases, click “Passcode options,” select “Custom numeric code,” and then enter your new passcode.
Here are a few final tips to make this long-passcode thing work better: •Within the “Touch ID & Passcode” settings screen, make sure to turn on the Erase Data setting to erase all data on your iPhone after 10 failed passcode attempts. •Make sure you don’t forget your passcode, or you’ll lose access to all of the data on your iPhone. •Don’t use Touch ID to unlock your phone. Your attacker doesn’t need to guess your passcode if she can push your finger onto the home button to unlock it instead. (At least one court has ruled that while the police cannot compel you to disclose your passcode, they can compel you to use your fingerprint to unlock your smartphone.) •Don’t use iCloud backups. Your attacker doesn’t need to guess your passcode if she can get a copy of all the same data from Apple’s server, where it’s no longer protected by your passcode. •Do make local backups to your computer using iTunes, especially if you are worried about forgetting your iPhone passcode. You can encrypt the backups, too.
By choosing a strong passcode, the FBI shouldn’t be able to unlock your encrypted phone, even if it installs a backdoored version of iOS on it. Not unless it has hundreds of years to spare.

Using random things for security may seem like a good idea, but... People really aren't good at remembering random things. Well, maybe YOU are, but I suck at it. What I *am* good at is remembering algorithms. "How to".
No, don't write the number down.
Try to come up with a hash of some sort, so you can think of it again in a pinch. For example, string together the digits corresponding to the positions in the alphabet of the letters of the first thing you think of when you look at whatever you need a passcode for. Go with your first thought, so you'll think of it again. Don't take too long, or you'll not be able to retrace those steps.
For example, if the first thing that pops into your head when you look at your iPhone is "credit card bill", take the digits corresponding to the letters c, r, e, d, i, t and string them together. Might take a bit of mental effort and counting on your fingers, but... Keep going until you get enough digits.
c - 3 r - 18 e - 5 d - 4 i - 9 t - 20
Voila, if you need a 7 digit passcode: 3185492
Make sure it's the first thing that comes to your mind (the power of associative memory is strong), and not something you have to think hard about. Maybe it's the name of the relative who gave it to you as a gift. Or the name of the mall with the Apple store. Maybe it's even the word "iPhone". Only you will know it - don't tell anyone that you're doing it, or even HOW you're doing it.
You could add your personal touch - say, add a value to each position value.
You *could* then even write the word(s) down. As long as you don't tell anyone just how you do your hash, the word will be meaningless to them.
Mostly you'll probably just remember the number. But when you have that "senior moment" - and trust me, it WILL happen - you'll have a backup plan.
In case there was ever any doubt, the Justice Department declared war on Apple on Thursday.
Prosecutors demanded that a federal judge force Apple to unlock San Bernardino killer Syed Rizwan Farook’s iPhone in a brief that bristled with so much venom that Apple’s top lawyer, Bruce Sewell, said it “reads like an indictment.” The Seven Most Vitriolic Passages in DOJ’s Response to Apple theintercept.com/2016/03/11/the-seven-most-vitriolic-passages-in-dojs-response-to-apple/
The problem isn't that the government can't access the data it needs to protect the public from the individual, it's that such protection is needed in the first place.

30 plus years of political dog whistle racial, sexist, and religious intolerance have created the Frankenstein that is DJ Trump.
The politicians are currently modeling this behavior nationwide, and exemplifying their greed is good mantra.
The pierced and tattooed entertainment industry is corrupt and absent of admirable values. Not to mention talent.
There is a lot out there for parents to have to overcome.
When I was young, my models were JFK, Roberto Clemente, Hank Aaron, Bonanza, Sky King and the Lone Ranger. Not to forget Zorro and Gene Autrey.
Many won't know what those influences were all about, but yeah, we grew up with a pretty different world being presented around us. Walter Cronkite as a model journalist. A show like M*A*S*H could actually get LESS lecherous than the film it was modeled after. Even Batman's Gotham City was just stupid fun, not a dark, stinking post-modern world where the misfits actually are creepy.
I have done my part to teach my now adult son to be moral and honest, but I'm under no illusion that the media, video games, and peers have had no effect on him. I only hope he grows - as many mature folks have - to realize that the only way the world we live in can work at all is if not everyone's a predator and you don't have to watch your back all the time.

Ok Mike, As a card carrying Protestant who hasn't been to church in the last 100years, I think we can agree on a couple points: We are all a product of our environment. We realized at some point that people lie, cheat and steal. We made a decision at some point to NOT be that way. We fought for concepts of honor, integrity and pride.
If your folks or extended family were in jeopardy, you'd want the damn iphone cracked.

"If your folks or extended family were in jeopardy, you'd want the damn iphone cracked."
that's a different case though
it's the same with the previously mentioned "... school bus full of kids ..."
in both cases above we're talking about people who are still alive and can be rescued
however in the current case the problem is 2 fold a> the perps are dead (no need to gather evidence for prosecution) b> those who were targeted are already dead or safe now because the perps are dead
thus there is no real necessity to crack the device other than 1984
I find the lack of configuration options disturbing !
I felt a great disturbance in the force.. as if millions of win 7 systems suddenly cried out in terror.

Unfortunately in the law enforcement world its rarely that simple. Cases are made and convictions are achieved by ambitious individual officers who need evidence to go on. The "system" has always walked a fine line between personal liberty and civil justice.
Taking a break from the societal and moral issues for a bit...
There actually IS a line past which something becomes practically impossible.
I mean, there's no question that if the thing were ground up in an industrial coffee grinder, the info would be lost, right?
Maybe this iPhone is already there, logically speaking.
The DoJ would have us believe that if Apple won't do the work, they'll just demand the source code and do it themselves with their staff of Timothy McGees. Apparently those geeks on staff haven't been able to do so without the source code, so...
Wouldn't it be embarrassing if they were to find that even with the source code the data is practically impossible to decrypt? What then? Spend the entire national budget on building a Universal AC to crack big cyphers? Then put it to the task of generating bitcoins when it's done with this iPhone to try to pay for itself?
Back to the politics...
President Obama said something like, "People will all be running around with Swiss bank accounts in their pockets."
Like that is some kind of terrible thing.
I found it quite offensive, because basically he implied "People who value privacy are bad because they have something to hide".
Not to mention that having "people all running around" is bad.
If your folks or extended family were in jeopardy, you'd want the damn iphone cracked.
No I would not!
Law enforcement has 99% of what they need to solve and prevent crimes, a ridiculous amount of money and resources, and are still very bad at everything, other than murdering unarmed citizens.
That last 1% of what they want comes at the cost of my liberty, and that is a tradeoff I am not willing to make.
It is a silly argument really, because there are over 800 apps for encryption including Telegraph and Signal, and two thirds of them are foreign made and out of the control of the US government.
More people in the US are killed by toddlers with guns than terrorists.
I refuse to be afraid of made up issues, when climate change may be the thing that kills us all.

"Murdering unarmed citizens" "toddlers with guns" "climate change" Sorry Mike, I won't dignify THAT with a response.
I live in a fact based world. If you have facts and statistics that refute what I have said, feel free to present them.
Ideology, beliefs, and name calling are not rational substitutes.
Fact, Its not my fault you were beat up by a bunch of nuns. If you want to spout left wing liberal tripe then do it somewhere else.
If you want to kick around the epic10failure, I'm all for that.
Since when have facts and statistics obtained a partisan value?
You are sounding like the trolls on the Answers forum now, "if you don't like what I say go away", really?
Being anti-authoritarian is left wing liberal tripe? What happened to the right wing mantra that government is the problem stuff?
Climate change can be factually measured by watching the water rise on our coastlines. They don't make left wing and right wing rulers.
The insignificance of terrorism in this country can be factually measures by a simple analysis of statistics. For example, you are more likely to be shot by a cop than a terrorist.
Again, facts and statistics are stubborn and not subservient to ideology or beliefs.
I agree that it is pointless to continue to engage on this encryption debate if we are not discussing facts, and lack of intellectual honesty substitutes name calling for valid argument.
Lawmaker Who Was CIA Agent Wants Big Data, Not Apple’s Encryption A former undercover CIA agent turned congressman says the FBI — by trying to force Apple to defeat its own security protocols — is barking up the wrong tree.
The FBI has demanded that Apple help it unlock a phone used by San Bernardino killer Syed Rizwan Farook, but Apple is refusing for the sake of its customers’ cybersecurity and privacy.
Rep. Will Hurd, R-Texas, said Tuesday that the FBI request might be too intrusive. He said there’s a way to “protect our civil liberties, defend our digital information, and chase bad guys all at the same time.”
<Rick> Good video. It's almost hard to believe that at one time Windows 98 was the resource hog, but even then, it still ran circles around what Windows 10 can do on today's modern hardware and look a heck of alot better doing it.

<Rick> As stated elsewhere, So much for the launch of Windows 11, "The Great Crash." Myself, I had a hard time getting into the site listed above, when I did get in, the video was partly done and then it crashed. There has been many other reports of crashing.

Oct 2, 2021 12:56:10 GMT -6
<Rick> Let's see ..., my impression of Windows 11 is that it is a spruced up version of Windows 10 requiring a 64-bit processor plus a piece of security hardware that is less than 4 years old in order for it to run.
