changewindows.org/build.php?id=110
What's new:
- Cortana is now supported in Spanish (Mexico), Portuguese (Brazil) and French (Canada).
- Cortana now provides more freedom when creating new reminders. You can now save useful information like the name of a book you want to read (ex: “remind me to read [insert book name]”), or a to-do item without a due date (ex: “remind me to wash the car”). You have the option to set specific details like location, time, and people at a later time so that Cortana will surface it when its most relevant. You can always view and edit all of these in the same place you see your reminders in Cortana today. In future builds Cortana will be able to retrieve these upon request, just like a real personal assistant would.
- The logon screen now uses the customizable lockscreen image as background instead of being stuck with the Hero image (as long as you're not using the Windows Spotlight). If you have a custom Lock screen background set, you will see your Lock screen background is now used for both the Lock screen and logon screen. If you’re a Windows Spotlight user – hold tight, you’ll see this change soon in a future build. We’re also working on some additional tweaks here to make the transition between the Lock screen and logging in much smoother.
- Improved performance for Japanese IME.
- Fixed an issue where Microsoft Edge and Cortana were crashing for users with roaming profiles. This will address it for users going forward, however if you’re currently impacted by this issue, please see this forum post.
- Fixed an issue where Cortana would continue to show reminders that have been completed.
- Fixed an issue where items copied/moved to the desktop would not display until the desktop is manually refreshed by right-clicking on the desktop and choosing “Refresh” or pressing F5.
- Fixed an issue where downloading certain drivers from Windows Update was causing some PCs to bluescreen.
- Messaging and Skype will now sync your messages between your phone and PCs.
Known issues:
- Surface Pro 3, Surface Pro 4 and Surface Book user may experience freezes or hangs or all input like keyboard, trackpad and touch won't work.
- Some PCs are reported to freeze or bluescreen when resuming from hibernation. Disabling hibernation is a workaround in some cases until this is fixed.
- If you have Kaspersky Anti-Virus, Internet Security, or the Kaspersky Total Security Suite installed on your PC there is a known driver bug that prevents these programs from working as expected in builds from the Development Branch.
- Turning on the “always show all icons in the notification area” setting disrupts the layout of the notification area (“systray”). Your notification area will look out of alignment.
- There are reports of crashes with apps such as QQ crashing due to an OS reliability issue we are currently investigating. This bug is also impacting older apps such as Windows Live Mail and Expression Encoder 4.
- Connectivity to older Wi-Fi networks using the WEP encryption security method may be broken. Use WPA2 or skip this build.
So the nasty tray bug hasn't been fixed yet—but they worked on Cortana. Unfortunately, that tray bug is bigger than what they're admitting to here. I created a Microsoft Answers thread and Feedback app entry about the bug. Basically:
- It has nothing to do with the "Always show all icons in the notification area" setting; if there are more than five icons visible, the layout is broken regardless of mode.
- They broke the Shell_NotifyIcon function. It now always returns True regardless of success or not. This causes some programs' tray icons not to appear at all. There is no workaround. Only programs that use a static tray icon (that disappears forever if Explorer crashes) or that use the brute-force NIM_ADD and NIM_MODIFY double-call work. Fortunately, most programs fall in either of these categories. But I've got some important ones that I can't use right now because they use the proper "If NIM_MODIFY = False Then NIM_ADD" method, and so their tray icons and notifications never appear due to the new bug. C'mon Microsoft!
However, there is something I'm really excited about in this build: It looks like Microsoft is actually paying attention to all our vehement feedback on this thread and in the Feedback app: They are working on smoothing out the login experience and allowing us to customize our login screen background. Many of us don't like the unchangeable Hero image, or the solid color background on the login screen. And I simply want to eliminate all the flickering transitions. On a fast, SSD power system with the Welcome screen timeout set to zero, it's about four screens that flash by rapidly during boot and login. Allowing them all to use the same image (as was possible in Windows 7) will greatly help improve the perceived speed and smoothness of the login experience. Hopefully they'll also allow us to boot directly to the login screen instead of the silly lock screen too.
