The key watchwords "all non security" updates for/since sp1 till april 2016. If it was ONLY IMPORTANT SECURITY i would jump on it in a heartbeat. How cool would that be ? All the updates on one CD-DVD for a clean install. Call me cynical.
So, does it have the traps Microsoft has tried to lay for users of older systems? Some indications are that GWX isn't included.
Many of us were mixing and matching individual updates in order to have the Windows 7 or 8.1 systems that WE want - free of telemetry, free of GWX, free of whatever checks.
We can assume Microsoft will be REQUIRING this update as the basis for future updates. What does that mean?
Is this the time to decide whether to stop updates entirely?

so far it seems to be directed at those within IT or those like us who know how to manage our systems:
> New Windows 7 SP1 convenience rollup makes image creation much faster
- um ya but the home versions are EULA Prohibited from making sysprepped images for deploy, however you can make "backup images" for restore to the same machine
I doubt it will be required / mandatory
> This convenience update is completely optional; it doesn’t have to be installed and won’t even be offered via Windows Update – you can choose whether or not you want to use it.
in the olden days this would have been a Service Pack and released to everyone but we all know that the release of a Service Pack changes the EOL date it's why they didn't SP5 win2K instead they made a rollup otherwise win2K would have had the same or nearly the same EOL Date as XP
it's the other change to non security updates that is more irritating:
> Monthly Rollups
> Also today we are announcing that non-security updates for Windows 7 SP1 and Windows 8.1 (as well as Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1, Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2012 R2) will be available as a monthly rollup (fixes rolled up together into a single update).
- um ya, how do we know there won't be anything fishy inside these multi-pack rollup updates !?
I find the lack of configuration options disturbing !
I felt a great disturbance in the force.. as if millions of win 7 systems suddenly cried out in terror.
I used it a few months back to get an update for 7 with a stuck in the mud WU, standalone installer for kernel-mode drivers. Recently had troubles updating yet another Win7x64sp1 machine. This one had a recent update agent- 7.6.7601.19046 The thing thrashed for five hours looking for updates. WU gui showed the "Never checked,Never installed" nonsense. Finally got 39 important security-15optional. Yeah, all the Ceip,Telem, upgrade prep, and of course GWX were hidden. Download/install/restart/config took only ten minutes.
The logs showed this machine was offline since last year.

How about a real world test ? Starting with this Thread and Locutus' links.... Dwnld & copy to CD/DVD the rollup, then apply it to a clean Win7sp1 install that has had NO updates via WU. Report back here the results. Anyone interested ?
<Rick> Good video. It's almost hard to believe that at one time Windows 98 was the resource hog, but even then, it still ran circles around what Windows 10 can do on today's modern hardware and look a heck of alot better doing it.

<Rick> As stated elsewhere, So much for the launch of Windows 11, "The Great Crash." Myself, I had a hard time getting into the site listed above, when I did get in, the video was partly done and then it crashed. There has been many other reports of crashing.

<Rick> I see Microsoft has been very quick to pull down reports of site crashing regarding the Launch of Windows 11 on the Microsoft Insiders forum.

<Rick> With reports of people being able to install the dev-edition of Windows 11 on machines not meeting spec, I thought I would give it a what-the-heck try. Lucky me, I'm caught in the downloading, doesn't meet spec, clearing, re-downloading loop on my machine!

<Rick> I've recently purchased a license for ArcaOS from www.arcanoae.com/ to play with. First impressions, it's still OS/2, but it now has a Linux twist to it.

<dozrguy> laptop shit out and am stuck buying a new one. os win11 as fucked as win10 was?
Oct 2, 2021 12:56:10 GMT -6
<Rick> Let's see ..., my impression of Windows 11 is that it is a spruced up version of Windows 10 requiring a 64-bit processor plus a piece of security hardware that is less than 4 years old in order for it to run.

<Rick> On the plus side, Microsoft is supposed to be supporting Windows 10 for some time to come for those of us still using systems with I7 or older processors.

<dozrguy> STILL so much bullshit and so little time for the kiddie ideas from the hill. My new laptop (MSI GE 11-UH461) would be an awesome "10" machine but because of Winblows I can only give it a "2"......wasted $3500

<Rick> Hello. Just checking in.

<isidroco> Each new w10 update adds >100000 useless files to \Windows\Servicing\LCU\Package_for_RollupFix... folders. Even in a SSD takes time to delete that stuff. In each version they manage to worsen stuff.

<Rick> No, there does not seem to be very much traffic these days. I still check in from time to time.
