To those who doubted my prediction that Windows would be a subscription service by 2020, it's already begun as a pilot program for Enterprise. Read this:
But that article makes a misstatement: "...the cost of developing, distributing, and supporting Windows isn't declining."
I disagree. If Microsoft doesn't spend the money/effort to ensure Windows is stable before release, the cost of developing and distributing it is WAY down. Build 14393 was built literally 2 weeks before it was delivered to users. And support? Please. In my lifetime support has gone from having an adept, responsive IBM or DEC technical staff on site to attempts to get through an automated answering system just to talk to someone from India who reads from a script. Have YOU had a good support experience in the past 10 or 20 years?
Windows 10 has been developed as almost exclusively a Windows Store interface. That implies the focus really is on the "play" part.
But what if even the frivolous users just stopped wanting to pay to play?
As much as I've hated Unix throughout my life and career - because frankly it's an undisciplined mess - I'm probably going to end up ultimately running some form of it rather than stay with Microsoft. For me it's all about maintaining the control to do even more with the OS than the designers of the OS imagine. The OS isn't the end-all, it's a tool.
That is unless something else better matures. I'd really like to continue running some form of Dave Cutler's virtual memory operating system.
Business is Microsoft's cornerstone of wealth. That they're turning almost completely away from it spells their doom, unless they come to their senses. Business needs function, not lip service.

For what its worth, my employment/retirement depends not at all on what 10 becomes four years from now. So, i don't really give a flying phig. Windows as a service would absolutely require a MSA for any/all use of the OS. How else would they collect ? They need an ID&payment plan similar to the windows store ? Forget about office 365, I'm talking about a subscription to use your damn PC. "Hello" on modern machines guarantees they have your mugshot and thumbprint. LOL If that becomes mandatory then count me out. Besides, Unix aint all that bad ! PC-BSD works for me,give it a try Noel.

I think the way they'll push 7 & 8.1 users over is to kill the activation on those OSs, or make interaction with other Windows based systems as difficult as they can. IDK but I have seen shit change at MS over the decades, from a respectable software company to a mercenary bunch of incompetents. I always keep a system running Linux, because I need at least one stable machine in my house. Mint rules man.
um, except CPU is OS Agnostic > as long as the x86 and x64 instruction set is there, then the OS will run on the processor the image in the article proves it XP running on a Haswell i5 CPU is identified, it's other components that are Yellow Banged!
it's all the surrounding components, chipsets etc. that become the problems
Intel has been in collusion with MS to block driver development for previous version OS for a long time now and it goes all the way back to near the beginning when we saw everything else start to get killed off Alpha, MIPS, etc. these had different instruction sets compared with Intel x86 and required separate builds of NT for each platform so MS got in bed with Intel and began killing everything else off by not doing new versions for the other platforms
AMD getting in bed with this BS is not funny either
what are they trying to do > Push Mac back to PPC
I've already made my decision no tentanic for me
I find the lack of configuration options disturbing !
I felt a great disturbance in the force.. as if millions of win 7 systems suddenly cried out in terror.
sounds like a collusion of companies to become monopolies in their respective fields and zkow-tow to the msft disillusion
if intel and Amd make their chips solely for win10 and beyond, that will nix any other OS being developed for modern hardware and software. many business's run some form of an os OTHER than winblows.pretty much cuts them right out of the picture. "winblows or nothing. sounds like shit to me........maybe my computingf days will soon be over!

Unless you crave all the extra goodies.... Your Windows OS does not need to be activated. 3/4 of the Win10machines i use every day are set up this way. I still get all the security related updates. No Sync,No OneDrive,No Candycrush No problem. Cortana yacks only when i say so. If i need C++ or .net framework for software I use it auto installs. Do i care about the occassional "activate windows" nag ? Nope.
A simple firewall strategy works for me. The downside of maintaining multiple 10machines is a royal pain in the butt. When i get fed up with it i shut em' all down and fire up the Vista,7,or Linux and they just plain simple work.
<Rick> Good video. It's almost hard to believe that at one time Windows 98 was the resource hog, but even then, it still ran circles around what Windows 10 can do on today's modern hardware and look a heck of alot better doing it.

<Rick> As stated elsewhere, So much for the launch of Windows 11, "The Great Crash." Myself, I had a hard time getting into the site listed above, when I did get in, the video was partly done and then it crashed. There has been many other reports of crashing.

<Rick> I see Microsoft has been very quick to pull down reports of site crashing regarding the Launch of Windows 11 on the Microsoft Insiders forum.

<Rick> With reports of people being able to install the dev-edition of Windows 11 on machines not meeting spec, I thought I would give it a what-the-heck try. Lucky me, I'm caught in the downloading, doesn't meet spec, clearing, re-downloading loop on my machine!

<Rick> I've recently purchased a license for ArcaOS from www.arcanoae.com/ to play with. First impressions, it's still OS/2, but it now has a Linux twist to it.

<dozrguy> laptop shit out and am stuck buying a new one. os win11 as fucked as win10 was?
Oct 2, 2021 12:56:10 GMT -6
<Rick> Let's see ..., my impression of Windows 11 is that it is a spruced up version of Windows 10 requiring a 64-bit processor plus a piece of security hardware that is less than 4 years old in order for it to run.

<Rick> On the plus side, Microsoft is supposed to be supporting Windows 10 for some time to come for those of us still using systems with I7 or older processors.

<dozrguy> i tried installing win10 om the 'shitout' pc this morning usung media creation. EPIC FAIL! went into an endless bootloop. win7 reinstalled just fine

<dozrguy> STILL so much bullshit and so little time for the kiddie ideas from the hill. My new laptop (MSI GE 11-UH461) would be an awesome "10" machine but because of Winblows I can only give it a "2"......wasted $3500

<Rick> Hello. Just checking in.

<isidroco> Each new w10 update adds >100000 useless files to \Windows\Servicing\LCU\Package_for_RollupFix... folders. Even in a SSD takes time to delete that stuff. In each version they manage to worsen stuff.

<Rick> No, there does not seem to be very much traffic these days. I still check in from time to time.
