An ode to WinFS
In the olden days, we used to have dry goods shops where you walked in, handed the clerk a list of your required goods. That person collated the goods; you paid, thanked the person, and walked out.
Now we have a grocery like Piggly Wiggly where you walk in, wander around trying to complete your list with a mental map of the aisles and shelves,
and it does get harder every time the supermarket gets bigger, changes and they move things around.
You push a progressively larger and heavier cart, because it will make you buy more they say, then stand in-line to check out and leave with nobody to thank other than perhaps a bagger.
Windows is like a grocery store.
All we get are makeovers every few years - a paint-job and new shelving. But at the end of the day - we still do all the work.
We already store massive terabytes of personal documents, photos, music, and video on our computers.
This is growing fast as our PC's have become the center of all our information, communication, and entertainment activities.
We are at the point where the NTFS "supermarket" has bloated into a giant mall that will soon be too big for our brains to manage - we will soon not be able to find our way around.
Longhorn WinFS promised us a "shop" with an efficient, fast, courteous person to store and retrieve documents for us - regardless of the quantity/type/size/complexity etc.
We all would be willing to pay for this SERVICE, and you would WANT to give a tip with paid upgrades.
Microsoft has betrayed the vision of its founders and that why I and so many others disappointed that WinFS and a 3D interface are not yet an inherent part of Windows.
