I *know* I'm very likely going to be stuck with upgrading, sooner or later (preferably later).
I *know* Microsoft hasn't even begun to make it difficult to run the older systems that give me value now.
I *know* I'm supposed to love their new direction.
I *know* I should be developing awesome Universal apps for a billion+ users.
I *have* been an early adopter and a Microsoft proponent, for as long as there was a Microsoft.
I *have* tuned up - successfully and beneficially - every one of their OSs. Ever.
I *do* have Windows 10 tweaked and running in a VM as well as Windows 10 could possibly run.
But now...
It's lost the magic. The thrill is gone. The party's over.
Even though I would probably stay relatively productive, it just feels like I would be giving in to mediocrity and all that's wrong to put it on my workstation.
I guess I'm suddenly old (this is someone running 8.1 and really liking it talking). It can't really be the software that's bad. How could such a huge company be wrong? It must be me. Maybe I'm just tired of it all.
Oh come on man. You know us old guys don't get the awesomeness that is Windows 10. If we were hipster millennials we would already be using it to drive our flying cars. All we can do is run our walkers on Windows 7, since as it is stable we would not fall and and be unable to get up. Our experience beta testing every Windows product since Gates birthed DOS means absolutely nil, since Windows 10 base code is made of rainbows and Unicorn farts. So on the MSFT forum we would naturally be expected to lay down, accept W10, and die quietly. Noel,
At the end of the day it doesn't matter what forum I'm on (though it's certainly nice to be among thoughtful, like-minded people). I don't give a rat's ass what shills or fanboys say, and I suppose that's part of my problem - I think too much for myself.
What matters to me is the reality of the system; what it is, what it does. What it can be made to do.
It's not like I've loved every release ever made before. I've had a lot to say about all the past releases too. A lot of negative. But... The key thing was that the policies of Microsoft didn't preclude tweaking and augmenting to make what was wrong better, or at least tolerable, on my systems. I've even enjoyed teaching others how to make theirs nicer.
Thing is, I *always* ended up with a system that was better, more useful, and more stable than what had been delivered by Microsoft. In some cases a whole lot better. Then I was able to have it be better for years.
Who'd have ever thought a company that got rich off doing things the way they did would ever consider changing their policies to close off the possibility of those very tweaks.
That 10586 did everything we feared and then some - destroyed tweaks, reinstalled junkware, undid privacy settings, introduced even buggier code that Microsoft isn't able to fix even after a constant stream of cumulative updates - this is the straw that broke the camel's back.
And now to hear that the new "Restroom" (er, what was it? "Redstone") pre-release is going to do all that's bad again, and push junkware to users again. All remaining hope is finally lost. I'm really depressed.
The first thing I notice when I installed Redstone 1 was that we were immediately back to Evaluation Copy. It is just like John Lennon sayed "Just Like Starting Over". One of the goofy things was thay some of what they had fixed before RS1, is now re-broken. I can't wrap my head around them rolling out RTM, before they had completed the whole Redstone program. RTM and Public release should never have occurred prior to the public without having found and fixed most of the known broken programs, apps, and services. What we got with this new build is a refucked test copy to deal with. They've compounded existing product defects with a new set to fix. They should do a graph illustrating the rise in suicides directly resulting from installing W10.

previous install was on an 80GB (74GB Real) E-IDE Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 used keyfinder to pull the COA Key from it no COA sticker was attached to the case, - tough beans MS, it's still a valid install, I know it is, because the previous owners were suckered by WUAU option 1 into installing WGA and it obviously passed
installed a StarTech 4-port SATA PCI card (SIL3114 chip) - Requires F6 Floppy drivers to install XP boot drive (attached to port 0 of the 4-port SATA card): - 2.5" - 320GB (298GB Real) 5,400 RPM WD Scorpio Blue SATA - 32,768MB (32GB Real) C:\ partition - remaining space = extended partition + logical drives for data all properly aligned for AFD 4K sectors with win 7 Diskpart
changed the graphics card from an AGP 4x 64MB to an AGP 8x 128MB - pulled this card from a failed 2002 socket 478 P-IV
etc.
then came the winders updates (not even 200MB) there were 140 - 4 that disappear during the process of installing, (one vanishes completely, 3 others just fail to install) and - 3 that I will never install 1. WGA : Will never install that 2. XP EOL Nagware : Will never install that 3. there is one media player "security update" that is a serious problem (causes high CPU Usage in media player)
and 3 that are permanently blocked before they can be offered: IE7, blocked with blocker toolkit and group policy IE8, blocked with blocker toolkit and group policy WiMP11, blocked with group policy
after first round of updates is done 3 more updates are presented and it's done started installation and secure configuration on Thursday, start download and install updates Friday finished last 3 updates and finalized the configuration and secure configuration which involves opening a system command prompt at HH:MM /interactive cmd from the system account command prompt inetcpl.cpl nuke the settings to secured (internet security zone: High, privacy: block all cookies, etc.) then cd C:\progra~1\intern~1 iexplore oh lookie here's IE6 running in the system context type C:\ in address bar configure folder options to turn off all the hide garbage right click C:\ in the left folder pane select properties uncheck index this drive for ... only one files has zero access permissions (Flash6.ocx which came from the winders updates) all others have the indexing attribute removed
last steps: - XP Activation : yup, it worked (suckers) - move all the update $KB... uninstall folders, and KB# install logs to another partition (can't do this with vista and up) - defrag - manual base backup image of C:\
so that was my last 2.0125 days - actual time spent doing work, under 1 day, - this thing had the updates required counted in under 20 minutes before it started to download them and it installs updates, and boots / reboots extremely fast
done, ready to deploy ? - almost, the PSU is under powered for the load I will be giving this machine which will include an extra 6x 3.5" HDDs, most of which are already installed just not plugged in the little 250w won't cut it for that, so off to find me a decent 500w - 550w PSU had to use this 250w PSU as the original one in the system was incorrect, it didn't have the 2x2 12v "P-IV" plug and it was the only one I had available with 20Pin ATX and 2x2 pin, and not proprietary non-standard ATX pinout
> much more fun than attempting to screw around with 10tanic.
I'm sure SRFakeman would tell me I'm wasting my time with EOL OS and hardware but W.T.F.C.? it's my hardware and my time (it keeps me from going nuts !) and it's gonna make me a nice storage pod that can actually be used unlike the modern garbage that can't be easily used (be it a NAS device or winders vista and up) XP, 2K, NT, 9x networking is zero hassle LAN just use same / same on all systems (same user name / same password) and everyone full control on the shared folders and never have a problem with accessing "MY OWN Files"
I find the lack of configuration options disturbing !
I felt a great disturbance in the force.. as if millions of win 7 systems suddenly cried out in terror.
Oh come on man. You know us old guys don't get the awesomeness that is Windows 10. If we were hipster millennials we would already be using it to drive our flying cars. I am moving ALL my computers back to XP pro I have had enough of MSFT continually trying to force win10 into my machines whether i want it or not. i actually feel safer using the older OS

<Rick> Good video. It's almost hard to believe that at one time Windows 98 was the resource hog, but even then, it still ran circles around what Windows 10 can do on today's modern hardware and look a heck of alot better doing it.

<Rick> As stated elsewhere, So much for the launch of Windows 11, "The Great Crash." Myself, I had a hard time getting into the site listed above, when I did get in, the video was partly done and then it crashed. There has been many other reports of crashing.

<Rick> I see Microsoft has been very quick to pull down reports of site crashing regarding the Launch of Windows 11 on the Microsoft Insiders forum.

<Rick> With reports of people being able to install the dev-edition of Windows 11 on machines not meeting spec, I thought I would give it a what-the-heck try. Lucky me, I'm caught in the downloading, doesn't meet spec, clearing, re-downloading loop on my machine!

<Rick> I've recently purchased a license for ArcaOS from www.arcanoae.com/ to play with. First impressions, it's still OS/2, but it now has a Linux twist to it.

<dozrguy> laptop shit out and am stuck buying a new one. os win11 as fucked as win10 was?
Oct 2, 2021 12:56:10 GMT -6
<Rick> Let's see ..., my impression of Windows 11 is that it is a spruced up version of Windows 10 requiring a 64-bit processor plus a piece of security hardware that is less than 4 years old in order for it to run.

<Rick> On the plus side, Microsoft is supposed to be supporting Windows 10 for some time to come for those of us still using systems with I7 or older processors.

<dozrguy> STILL so much bullshit and so little time for the kiddie ideas from the hill. My new laptop (MSI GE 11-UH461) would be an awesome "10" machine but because of Winblows I can only give it a "2"......wasted $3500

<Rick> Hello. Just checking in.
Mar 17, 2022 10:46:54 GMT -6
<isidroco> Each new w10 update adds >100000 useless files to \Windows\Servicing\LCU\Package_for_RollupFix... folders. Even in a SSD takes time to delete that stuff. In each version they manage to worsen stuff.

Oct 9, 2022 17:32:44 GMT -6
<Rick> No, there does not seem to be very much traffic these days. I still check in from time to time.
