Microsoft warns enterprises to upgrade to Windows 10 or be left behind
Microsoft made an announcement this week detailing its future plans for support for new processors on older versions of Windows, specifically, how Windows 7 and Windows 8 will not be officially supported with the next set of Intel processors. Microsoft is looking for every angle to spur consumers and, perhaps more important, enterprises, to get Windows 10 installed already. One such angle is the close link between Windows and Intel’s CPUs. It’s always been true that Microsoft and Intel work very closely together to ensure that the latest version of Windows supports the latest Intel chipset innovations.
So now Intel has gone evil as well. MS will support Win7 until 2020, but Intel thinks 2016 is the right time. I think I will non renew my ITP membership in protest.
Axis if evil looking for one more member? Perhaps Western Digital will start selling compromised hard disks.
Based on the 60 minutes story last nite regarding China spying, I believe that this is some of what SRFreeman was talking about. Billions in losses to American corporations from injected malware stealing intellectual property. So while there is some merit in what the duopoly of MS/Intel are doing relative to security, it is much the same as losing our personal freedoms to the NSA, except were are now losing our computer freedoms to the idea of security, or so it would appear.
And as we learned from a young Ferris Bueller many years ago, it seems that the only way to win these days, it to not play.

Intel has been doing that for a long time
in collusion with MS disguised as NDA agreements
yup, no current support for any previous version OS
good luck even getting vista to install and run on most of the recent Intel offerings
ya they hosed me more than once
> nope you cannot have the F6 SATA AHCI drivers for XP on the DG965RY Motherboard because vista is released now
um, ya, that's great, except I know that the ICH on that motherboard and the 965 chipset are older than vista so who's being the bully here, MS, Intel or both !?
I find the lack of configuration options disturbing !
I felt a great disturbance in the force.. as if millions of win 7 systems suddenly cried out in terror.

Interesting, Is this the breakout opportunity for AMD ? The maverick second banana's chance to steal marketshare from intel ? Has anyone tried XP or Vista on a brand new A10 ?
it seems that the only way to win these days, it to not play.
I like playing with my fine old toys, which work in every way I can tell better than the new ones.
And I can assure you that no one - not even China - is gettin' MY data.
Just imagine how easy Microsoft is making things. Because it's just so lame, there's not YET one blasted App I've ever been able to find (or get anyone to describe) that makes it worthwhile to even begin to use the Metro/Modern/Univeral App environment (and Microsoft Store). I mean, in an alternate universe/timeline they COULD have made it really good, and we'd all be facing an actual prospect of "being left behind"!
Maybe it'll happen after a time that they'll polish the turd so much that parts of it will become useful (in the way, for example than an actual fossilized turd could be used as a hammer). THEN we'll have to worry. But the possibility that someone else will produce a competing product that's just SO much more valuable is real. It's not impossible in a technical sense that some other company could make an OS that's actually good.

And sometimes you can. I used to support all the workstations in the engineering divisions at the two big companies I've been with. There are wonderful things you can accomplish when the users are bright and you can actually teach them to do things better. It turns out most folks really do want to be able to do their jobs more easily and efficiently.
I know what you mean, though, there is a class of basic users who embody the classic old joke where the first question from the support person is "is there light coming from the screen?"
<Rick> Good video. It's almost hard to believe that at one time Windows 98 was the resource hog, but even then, it still ran circles around what Windows 10 can do on today's modern hardware and look a heck of alot better doing it.

<Rick> As stated elsewhere, So much for the launch of Windows 11, "The Great Crash." Myself, I had a hard time getting into the site listed above, when I did get in, the video was partly done and then it crashed. There has been many other reports of crashing.

<Rick> I see Microsoft has been very quick to pull down reports of site crashing regarding the Launch of Windows 11 on the Microsoft Insiders forum.

<Rick> With reports of people being able to install the dev-edition of Windows 11 on machines not meeting spec, I thought I would give it a what-the-heck try. Lucky me, I'm caught in the downloading, doesn't meet spec, clearing, re-downloading loop on my machine!

<Rick> I've recently purchased a license for ArcaOS from www.arcanoae.com/ to play with. First impressions, it's still OS/2, but it now has a Linux twist to it.

<dozrguy> laptop shit out and am stuck buying a new one. os win11 as fucked as win10 was?
Oct 2, 2021 12:56:10 GMT -6
<Rick> Let's see ..., my impression of Windows 11 is that it is a spruced up version of Windows 10 requiring a 64-bit processor plus a piece of security hardware that is less than 4 years old in order for it to run.

<Rick> On the plus side, Microsoft is supposed to be supporting Windows 10 for some time to come for those of us still using systems with I7 or older processors.

<dozrguy> STILL so much bullshit and so little time for the kiddie ideas from the hill. My new laptop (MSI GE 11-UH461) would be an awesome "10" machine but because of Winblows I can only give it a "2"......wasted $3500

<isidroco> Each new w10 update adds >100000 useless files to \Windows\Servicing\LCU\Package_for_RollupFix... folders. Even in a SSD takes time to delete that stuff. In each version they manage to worsen stuff.

<Rick> No, there does not seem to be very much traffic these days. I still check in from time to time.
