Already receiving pop up notices about "end of support". Uh, the notices insinuate that MSE will no longer be capable of protecting Vista and the link takes me to the XP generic end- of support page. The page leads one to believe that old machines and their corresponding old OS should be kicked to the curb. More MS propaganda. Out with the old & in with the new. Blah blah blah
Well, after a month of vetting them in a VM I've gone ahead and updated my Win 8.1 system on my main workstation, as enough pertinent updates had finally accumulated to make me think doing so could be valuable. I did it at 1am on Friday the 13th just to make the statement that I prefer hard information over superstition. So far, absolutely nothing has gone wrong in a full day of use (I'm also stating that to poke Murphy in the eye).
My Win 7 system, on the other hand, hasn't had an update in 7 months, and I'm still seeing no reason to do one. It's mature and it just keeps on ticking. Reliability monitor shows a perfect 10 and it's currently up for a bit over 3 months straight without a glitch.

none of my rebuilds use MSE I stopped installing it when I found thousands of file corruptions caused by MSE when you copy / move files to USB massive data corruptions occur and you don't find out until you try to use the files
there is an "update" for XP, Win 7 RTM, and Ape which is EOL FUD-Ware
haven't seen it during this Vista rebuild if it happens I'll post about it because none of the KB pages indicate that one of them is FUD-Ware
on a test build of win 7 I accidentally installed that FUD-Ware good thing it was a test build I left a note on the KB page about distributing FUD-Ware as "security updates" since I build all my win 7 installs from RTM and the FUD-Ware is not a prerequisite for installing SP1 I don't need this notification and neither does anyone else
I find the lack of configuration options disturbing !
I felt a great disturbance in the force.. as if millions of win 7 systems suddenly cried out in terror.
Another Vistax86 Home Premium install. 2006 vintage media on a 2016 vintage machine. SP1 via standalone KB 936 330 (Wave 0) results in... WU update agent/client 7.0.6001.18000. That sucker Kicks ass. Instantly finding 116 important & 4 optional updates. An hour n 5 minutes later all installed. As opposed to the infamous 7.6.7600.256 agent that butchers the hardware for hours/days on end .
Locutus, you are sooo right when you say they purposely screwed that pooch.
Well, well, well. Just when i thought all hope was lost to get a fully updated Vistax86 on brand new hardware....
Just a couple things first, Vista rtm,+sp1 via standalone,+sp2 via standalone results in NONfunctional windows update. As a system it works, but with a couple more months of extended support i wanted to get it all. Vista rtm +sp1 via standalone results in fully functional WU up to a point. At sometime before sp2(kb 948 465 vintage 8-24-2010) is offered, even the older update agent struggles.
Yes it can be done ! As of now i have a fully up to date Vistax86 SP2 HomePremium install on this brand new hp15notebook with the 7th gen A10. Current WUagent 7.6.760.256 works just fine. None of the cpu/hardware thrashing that i(we) have come to expect. WU responds instantly.
and a short time later, WUagent 7.6.760.256 found & installed 180+ updates !

on the HP which was rebuilt 4 years ago and ran crapdates fine until the SVCHOSED.EXE bug hit in 2016
I had to manually put in the last 4 missing updates from the 6 pack above without the KB320####s it was SVCHOSED 100% eternally
after installing the missing 4, WUAU ate about 1.5 hours because of the MSO 2010 Pro installation that also wanted some attention
now it just pops up shortly after I start it up wanting a winders defender update because it only runs 2 times / week it doesn't get the daily defender update
I removed MSE because I got tired of the flippin data corruption on everything from small .gif or jpg to every ISO file copied to USB
I'm still gonna reset it, but on a new disk will remove the current disk and stick it in a box then install another disk clone the recovery partition I have from the original OEM HP supplied disk only the recovery partition works as the remainder of the disk is borked so I punched out the other partitions and left only the recovery partition the original recovery partition never had the recovery media created from it (HP only allow one) so every time I clone it I get a new set of recovery DVDs from the clone!(Muwahahahaha!)

A very resourceful hacker, you are Locutus ! Done that myself on a Toshiba oem Win7 recov partition.
Actually, oftentimes there's a simple file on the recovery partition that states whether the recovery media has been created or not. A simple edit in Notepad is all it takes to reset the flag and burn another copy.
Microsoft, is Windows 10 the best you could do? Really? After promising to listen to our feedback, what a letdown!

I've never been able to make that work with HP OEM Vista or HP OEM Win 7
all web search seems to only lead to doing it on HP OEM XP recovery partitions
plus they changed the disc creator / recovery manager in every version even some early win 7 systems have a different recovery manager than ones shipped later
I find the lack of configuration options disturbing !

Two different Vista x86 installs
Kb3205715-security for Win DVD maker Kb3214051-security for Win DirectShow Kb3216916-security for MSFT XML Core services Kb3217587-generic security for Windows Kb3218362-security Internet messaging API Kb4011981-security for Windows Kernel Kb4012204- iex9 cumulative security(same as newer iex versions?) Kb4012373-MSFT internet info services vulnerability. Kb4012497-critical security KernelModeDrivers&Graphics.. Kb4012583 & 4012584-MSFT Graphics component vulnerability Kb4012598-critical security for SMB server Kb4013867- Silverlight security update

on x86 I put these 4 in manually:
KB3205638 KB4012583 KB4015195 KB4015380
seems to be working fine and wasn't offered KB4017018 after that - scratch that it showed up an hour later
took about a half hour of bouncing between SVCHOSED.EXE and TrustedInstaller.exe with "downloading" sitting on 100% the whole time this particular test system is the Toshiba factory reset that I left with the available updates list after SP2 was installed and didn't start the installs so that if any were superseded / replaced they'd disappear from the list without having installed them

I got fed up waiting for WU, last night. www.catalog.update.microsoft.com Searched Vista Security updates. Dwnlded/installed these: All x86 KB401 5383-Libjpeg info disclosure vulnerability. KB401 5380-ATMFD.dll info disclosure vulnerability. KB401 5159-Win32 info disclosure vulnerability. KB401 5067-Scripting engine memory corruption issue. KB401 4794-Libjpeg info disclosure vulnerability. KB401 4652-another Libjpeg info disclosure vulnerability. KB401 7094- Latest Silverlight v5.1.50906.0
also available KB401 5068-LDAP privilege elevation issue KB401 4793-MS Office remote code execution problem.
All was good after restart/config. Ran WU overnight, installed KB 401 7018-Security for MSFT Graphics componentreplaces earlier kb 401 2583. It locked up my dsktop, no Esc or Ctrl/Alt/Delete, frozen. Soft OFF-got me restarted, Restarted 3 times before i got a fully functioning dsktop. Have not UNinstalled it yet. All seems OK now.

<Rick> Good video. It's almost hard to believe that at one time Windows 98 was the resource hog, but even then, it still ran circles around what Windows 10 can do on today's modern hardware and look a heck of alot better doing it.

<Rick> As stated elsewhere, So much for the launch of Windows 11, "The Great Crash." Myself, I had a hard time getting into the site listed above, when I did get in, the video was partly done and then it crashed. There has been many other reports of crashing.

<Rick> I see Microsoft has been very quick to pull down reports of site crashing regarding the Launch of Windows 11 on the Microsoft Insiders forum.

<Rick> With reports of people being able to install the dev-edition of Windows 11 on machines not meeting spec, I thought I would give it a what-the-heck try. Lucky me, I'm caught in the downloading, doesn't meet spec, clearing, re-downloading loop on my machine!

<Rick> I've recently purchased a license for ArcaOS from www.arcanoae.com/ to play with. First impressions, it's still OS/2, but it now has a Linux twist to it.

<dozrguy> laptop shit out and am stuck buying a new one. os win11 as fucked as win10 was?
Oct 2, 2021 12:56:10 GMT -6
<Rick> Let's see ..., my impression of Windows 11 is that it is a spruced up version of Windows 10 requiring a 64-bit processor plus a piece of security hardware that is less than 4 years old in order for it to run.

<Rick> On the plus side, Microsoft is supposed to be supporting Windows 10 for some time to come for those of us still using systems with I7 or older processors.

<dozrguy> i tried installing win10 om the 'shitout' pc this morning usung media creation. EPIC FAIL! went into an endless bootloop. win7 reinstalled just fine

<dozrguy> STILL so much bullshit and so little time for the kiddie ideas from the hill. My new laptop (MSI GE 11-UH461) would be an awesome "10" machine but because of Winblows I can only give it a "2"......wasted $3500

<Rick> Hello. Just checking in.

<isidroco> Each new w10 update adds >100000 useless files to \Windows\Servicing\LCU\Package_for_RollupFix... folders. Even in a SSD takes time to delete that stuff. In each version they manage to worsen stuff.

<Rick> No, there does not seem to be very much traffic these days. I still check in from time to time.
